Mountain Valley 8A team completed the sweep of Liberty Hill in dramatic fashion, scoring with 4 seconds to avert a tie, 20-12.

“Both of our 8th grade teams played great,” Head Coach Brandon Pawelek said. “Last week, we went over to Liberty Hill and got beat in both games, so it was great to see our kids win both games this week.”

The happy Coach Pawelek then put his thoughts for that last game, “Last week the A team battled until the very end and we lost on a last second play and this week we came back and executed very well on both sides of the ball.”

“We had to overcome 3 turnovers in the first half and our defense only gave up one touchdown during that stretch,” Coach Pawelek said excitedly. “The defense was solid all game long and our offense had some big plays, especially our last touchdown to go ahead with 12 seconds left….it was a really fun game for the coaches and the players.”

The ReSporter would also add the game was fun for the fans too.

Mountain Valley did not waste any time in getting a score as they drove 53 yards on 7 plays as Cody Daily would cross the goal line on a 21 yard run, for the first of three times in winning the game.

“I was thinking that we needed to beat them and get revenge,” Daily said weekly. “This will mean a lot and this was one of the hardest district teams. Now we will need to finish out with our next three games and I am just jumbles right now.”

Those jumbles can play with your mind as each of the interviews on this night was after a great last second win giving a lot of players the jumbles with words to say.

The Hawks had a special defense on this night as several players played lock down.

Ethan Slater had one play where he was being stiff armed but was not denied as he brought down the Panther runner for a 7 yard loss in the second quarter.

Liberty Hill first score in the second quarter was on their 4th time with the ball and that score would tie the score with less than a minute on the halftime clock.

The Panthers had a chance to make a statement starting the second half with the rock, but MV did not bulge and held for a three play and punt defensive stand.

Then the MV team would respond with a one play 26 yard burst for Daily for the second Hawk score and 12-6 lead.

Liberty Hill would then have their best drive taking over in the 3rd quarter and scoring with 6 minutes left in the game in the 4th quarter.

That Panther drive was for 13 plays and had a critical penalty against Mountain Valley on an inadvertent face mask that wiped out another negative play for LH and giving the Panthers a vital first down.

Mountain Valley would still have enough time to get the lead back but their fourth down try at the Panther 16 yard line ended up one yard short and losing the ball on downs.

With less than a minute left in the game, Liberty Hill was sacked and faced a 4th down and 6 yards needed for a first.

Off of a fake punt formation, cornerback Cody Kline snagged an interception and ran the ball back 14 yards to the 14 yard line with 8 seconds on the clock.

On that previous drive, MV lost QB Nic Rivera on his running attempt for a first to an injury and that would give the Hawks one more chance with their back up QB Cody Kline.

So, the player responsible with the interception would be on the line for a chance to run or pass for a winning touchdown.

The snap was good and guess who was darting past the end zone line for a catch would be Daily for his third and most important score of the game from 14 yards out leaving just 4 seconds on the clock for a Panther comeback try.

“This felt really good,” Center Boogie Crownover said. “Last week we were being blown up by their defensive end (Uriel Diaz) and we practiced our runs against our on Devon Cordell and that helped us today.”

Two play later after the kick-off the Panthers would be the team with their heads down as they formed their line to congratulate their opponent for a job well done.

“I was nervous and excited,” Kline was inclined to say. “When it happened my mind was running and now this will give us another chance of winning the championship.”

Two plays with an interception and throwing a touchdown consecutively would be an ending that will surely be great dream starts for many nights to come.

Mountain Valley 8B Win in All Phases, 20-6

Mountain Valley Hawks 8th Graders righted the ship in their two games with Liberty Hill as they used 20-20 vision in taking down the Panthers and reversing losses from last week’s games, 20-6 and 20-12.

Head Coach for the MVMS B squad, Raymond Amaro surmised, “We played great in all phases of the game.”

“They practiced hard all week and were really determined to avenge their loss from last week,” Coach Amaro continued. “This team has come along way since last year and we look forward to improving each week and winning a district championship.”

MVMS B squad used the Paul Martinez show in the first game as this young man averaged over 13 yards per carry in route to his 148 steps to Hawk Heaven.

Mountain Valley had the numbers as they dominated the first half with 113 vs. 41 in yardage, but still just claimed a 6 point lead late in the 3rd quarter.

Martinez would increase his touchdown yardage with each score as he ran for 13, 34 and then 58 yards to put these Panthers out of their misery.

The Hawks doubled up the yardage to make this game a statement in tying the 2 game series at one a piece.

That score will keep the Hawks in the hunt for the district crown for this campaign.

Mountain Valley scored on 3 of their 4 possessions and the only time thing stopping the Hawks was the clock as MV just ran out the clock on their last possession.

“We practiced and clowned around last week before our first game with Liberty Hill,” Running Back Martinez assessed. “We actually started focusing and we knew what we needed to do and now this will give us confidence and help us win district.”

Liberty Hill did have a good drive to get closer near the end of the game, but a fumble would douse any hope of a comeback at the Hawk 8 yard line.

Now Mountain Valley 8B team will prepare for a Fredericksburg team as this game will commence before Halloween keeping the clowning costumes in the closet.

Go Mountain Valley Hawks!!
