Hawks JV & Varsity Start Season with Loss to Badgers, 52-40

Canyon Lake’s Varsity started their first home game shooting 22 % in the first half and then collapsed in the 4th quarter losing to the Lampasas Badgers, 52-40.

“It is early and there is a long way to go and we are still missing 3 major pieces,” Head Coach Luke Chapman surmised. “They made just one shot from outside and it was just their post play that killed us.”

Even after starting the game shooting blanks, the Hawks only found themselves down 2 points going into their halftime talk.

The Hawks took their first lead with :50 seconds to go in the third quarter and even increased that lead to 3 points to start the final stanza after a 3pt shot from Charlie McIntosh.

That would be the last good thing to happen for this game as Lampasas finished the game outscoring Canyon Lake, 24-8.

LH Badgers then had a 13 point run and was able to keep their separation as the game closed for a first game Hawk loss.

Heath McDonough finished the game with high point honors scoring 9 points followed by Justin Ferris’ 7 as the 32% shooting helped seal this game.

A turnover fest exasperated this effort with 14 coming in those last two quarters and not allowing the offense to get any momentum when needed during the fourth quarter.

A decent game from the charity stripe which has not been a Hawk strong point in year’s past in making 10 out of 15.

There were also several players not playing as Tyler Williams, Robert Woods, and Haden Lee were not able to suit up as this season gets started.

Those three students will be able to add some broth in the lanes as Lampasas made their living inside the paint as the Badgers had just one made outside shot for this contest.

Canyon Lake will be in action against the Billies this Friday as their game will start at the conclusion of CLJV.

Come out for some fun entertainment and cheer your Hawks on as they take on Fredericksburg.

The Hawk JV Boys basketball team started their season with a loss to the Lampasas Badger team, 34-31.

CLJV could not get their inside shots to go in and Lampasas increased their lead to 8 points twice with a lead of 19-11 during the middle of the second quarter.

CL’s defense helped in getting this game down to a one possession game as the 4th quarter got tight.

“In the second half we played better defense,” Head JV Coach Brian Hooper said. “That defense got us back into the game and that was a good situation at the end of the game to have a chance and that will come in handy.”

The Hawk’s out rebounded Lampasas JV by 10 boards with 11 offensive rebounds helping the Hawks forge a comeback that just fell short.

On the flip side of those offensive rebounds, Canyon Lake, had an atrocious shooting percentage coming in right at 18% for the contest.

This JV team will get better as they certainly got off enough shots for those averages to become mute in this comeback.

Will Nance and Caimen McDonough combined for 17 rebounds and 5 of the 6 steals as great effort was left on the court as the game finished.

“We had smarter passes in the second half,” Nance started. “We pushed our intensity on defense and started crashing the boards which gave us more opportunities.”

Ryner Martin led the team with 7 points as the point guard was able to whittle 2 assists to boot.

“We started shooting better after our bad start,” Ryner shot. “Then we got our aggressive defense and started scoring off of their turnovers.”

Canyon Lake JV will not take long for those point blank shots to become made shots as this season matures.

Another good sign was finishing with 11 turnovers which was another reason for getting close enough to make this game go down to the wire.

Defense also played a key in this contest as CLJV held the Badgers scoreless from the 3:20 mark in the 4th quarter helping with the comeback.

The JV will be in action this Friday when Fredericksburg comes to town as each Hawk team will play on the main floor, so come early and see the improvement.
