Hawks Finish First Day of Tournament, 1-1 after Losing to Blanco
Canyon Lake finished their first day of tournament play at the Canyon Lake Classic Tournament on Friday evening beating Lockhart and losing to Blanco.
The Hawks lost to Blanco in overtime as CL was down 15 points in the 3rd Quarter, 51-36 at the 4:03 mark.
Canyon Lake then outscored Blanco with great defense and timely offense by finishing that last part of the quarter outscoring the Panthers 10-0.
The Hawks then started the 4th Quarter outscoring Blanco 11-2 which would give CL their largest lead, 59-53 but the game would end with both teams more than a 2 point advantage until the final horn.
In the Lockhart game, the Hawks, rushed out to a 15-2 start and used that advantage for the remainder of the game.
Canyon Lake then started their 3rd Quarter like the 1st Quarter by outscoring Lockhart 16-8 and the largest lead of the night, 43-25.
After getting the lead up to 20 points, Lockhart whittled down CL’s advantage to 9 points a couple of times before the Hawks closed with the 11 point win.
This game featured Robert Woods after getting his ok to play from his football injury.
Woods would start his campaign as the high point Hawk scoring a game high 13 points and giving Canyon Lake some valuable minutes inside the paint on defense and solid shooting on the offensive side of the court.
“It feels good,” Woods said when asked how his game went. “I just want to help the team and the more I can put pressure on defenses when making my shots will open some shots for my teammates.”
“He is hard to go around,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said when responding to having Woods back in his line-up. “He gives us another low post guy and he is big and strong and when he has the ball, then he has the ball.”
Coach was responding to how hard it is to slap the ball out of Woods hands when he can get a rebound.
CL pulled down 42 rebounds in this contest while shooting a respectable 43% from the field.
Some timely three-pointers did not hurt as Canyon Lake seems to be getting better in many areas offensively as this team from top to bottom continues to get solid play from all their players.
Canyon Lake will take the hardwood again Saturday at 9am when they meet Fredericksburg in the round robin portion of the Tourney.
Go Hawks!!
