Hawks Soar Higher than Eagles in 55-38 Win

Canyon Lake held Pleasanton to 20 points below their season average in their win Tuesday night on the road, 55-38.

The Hawk’s shooting percentage was not good but that part of the game was overcome on the offensive glass as CL finished with 16 offensive rebounds.

A slow start in scoring 17 points in that first half had Canyon Lake looking at a 6 point deficit coming out of their locker for the second round of play, 17-23.

“We forced them into 33 turnovers,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We picked up our defensive pressure, which caused them to make mistakes and take poor shots….I was very pleased with our defensive intensity and our guards did a great job of pressuring the ball.”

Canyon Lake was also having a turnover epidemic in that first half as they committed 16 contributing to their slow start.

Coach Chapman then started the 3rd quarter with Will Gray as point guard in the second half and the Hawks had only 5 turnovers in those last two quarters and finished the game with 12 assists and 19 steals.

“He (Gray) did a great job offensively and defensively,” Coach Chapman assessed.

Consistency is an item that has been missing and will hurt any team sport. This year’s basketball edition has the ability to be one of CL’s best if they can corral that part of their game.

In last week’s Canyon Lake tournament, the Hawks, beat the team that won (Lockhart) but lost to all the other opponents on that two day jaunt.

Just not being consistent was a good reason for those losses.

Now the Hawks will play their last game before the Christmas break this Friday and tinkering with this team to help in cutting down on those mistakes might be a cure all in getting Boy’s Basketball to the promise land this season.

Rory Preiss had another good game with a double-double scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds with 7 being on the offensive glass.

Brandon Ward also chipped in 10 points while Tyler Williams just missed that two digit scoring with 9 on the night.

The Eagles did have a player averaging 17 points a game but the Hawks not only kept the team below their average but also the Eagles top scorer.

“We played full-court man most of the second half, which really got us going,” Chapman closed. “We rotated different guards on him (leading scorer), and made sure we were aware when he had the ball…..our help defense was very good tonight and we contested shots and forced them into tough shots.”

A very good sign indeed when a team shoots under 40% from the floor and free throw line and still can pull out a 17 point win on the road.

Now Canyon Lake needs to work on using the type of game they played in the second half for 4 quarters.

Go Hawks and Beat Boerne this Friday.
