Canyon Lake won their 10th game of the season scoring a 9 point win to end their first round of District 26-4A games, 50-41.

CL needed this win as they are now holding down a spot for a playoff berth if they just repeat what was done in the first round of games.

This win tied for the second most victories in a season at 10 when the ’12-’13 Hawk team finished that year.

Another district conquest and this Hawk team will accomplish their most wins in district play since they started playing varsity in ’08-’09 year.

Will Gray led the Hawks scoring 12 points and tied Brandon Ward with 3 assists.

With 17 turnovers, Canyon Lake was able to be in a sustainable area that allows the Hawks for a good outcome.

It was a book-end game as Canyon Lake outscored Yoakum, 31-17 in the 1st and 4th quarters. But were outscored 19-24 during the middle part of this contest.

What happened in those two middle quarters will need to be cleaned up as district teams on the upper echelon will win games like this going away.

“We had no energy,” Head Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman assessed. “We did bring some guys in that brought something different and Heath McDonough had one of his best games since the first games of this year.”

McDonough had been slumping during district play but a steal in the 4th quarter and driving the whole court for an easy lay-up allowed the Hawks to stave off a Bulldog charge as the game was getting contentious.

That steal and bucket was when Yoakum had whittled the game down to a 3 point affair, 38-35.

“I thought bout it,” McDonough said when commenting if he thought about dunking the ball on that drive. “We just got to play with more energy and we need to practice with more energy.”

After that play for EverReady, Canyon Lake outscored the visitors 10-6 for their final 9 point win.

The Hawks had enjoyed a lead until Yoakum seized that advantage at the 6:41 point of the 3rd quarter, 22-23.

That lead would see/saw as CL enjoyed a 35-34 lead starting the last stanza.

A 3 point play the old fashion way from Brandon Ward with right under 4 minutes left in the game help increase the lead to 7 points helping give enough separation for this important win.

Canyon Lake will now go on the road this Tuesday with a rematch at Gonzales and with a win put themselves another win closer to the ultimate goal.

Playoffs for a team yet to have an order put into a T-Shirt company for accomplishing that endeavor.
