Lady Hawks Scare 1st Place Navarro, 39-43

GO HAWKS!!

             GO HAWKS!!

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks was this close (as you put your index finger with a small space between your thumb), as the upstart never say die Hawks took first place Navarro to the wire, 43-39.

“I am really proud of this team,” Head Coach Mary-Beth Gallagher stated. “This team spent practice these last few days with hard work and that almost helped them pull off an upset.”

The Hawks had not regained their mojo since the taking the Christmas break but if this game is any indication for things to come then this could be a good season in district play.

A moral win sounds empty but based on how this Hawk team had struggled, to come into a gym where a team has a 3-0 district record, then coming within a minute of taking a win was good.

“Yeah, I will take this moral win,” Coach Gallagher said with a grimace.

CL started the game with a nifty pass from Sarah Russell to a cutting to the basket in the back door, Alexa Ramos, for a lay up and that shot would have your Hawks in the lead until 4:44 left in the second quarter.

Canyon Lake would stay close throughout this whole contest with a 5 point deficit going into halftime was still a manageable game.

The Hawks came out in their locker room by cutting into the Panther lead 3 points and being down, 27-25 going into the final stanza.

CL would then put on a clinic with a 9 point run to start the final quarter and forge to a 34-27 lead with just over 5 minutes remaining.

The Hawks would increase their lead to 9 points on a Ramos lay-up followed by a Caitlin Mabry free throw.

Emma Gray came back strong after missing her last game with 9 points and dishing out some assists.

“This game was upsetting because we had them,” Gray said black and white. “Everybody (in district) will find out that we will not be an easy team to play.”

Unfortunately the lid closed on the basket as that would be CL’s final points as Navarro started hitting clutch shots while Canyon Lake was saying good-bye to Emma Gray and Mia Riali after fouling out.

Missed free throws and turnovers would help in keeping Navarro in the game as the Panthers finally took the lead with just 46 seconds left on the clock.

Night and day difference from the team the fans witnessed on this night compared to last Saturday.

Now, Canyon Lake will need to figure out how to bottle this energy and hold on for a minute longer and a win.

“If we can keep playing like this then we can beat a lot of teams,” Coach Gallagher said with confidence.

Now it will be the Cuero Gobblers coming to town this Friday for a chance to get back on the winning track.
