The ReSporter will start this week’s article concentrating on Girls Basketball as the Hawks strive for a chance not seen since the 2009-10 season, or the last time a playoff game was played.
Who was part of that team? Ashley Pfaff was the headliner that year as the Senior transfer student came to town and helped CL to a 19-10 record and a Bi-District appearance.
Just look at the All-Time list of athletes and they will be peppered by many of the players from that team.
Tiffany Tschoepe, Tiffany Arredondo, Megan Browning among others were able to turn around the team to their best record that still stands today.
One similarity between these two teams is another Senior transfer student helping to catapult Canyon Lake for a chance of scheduling more games.
Emma Gray leads Canyon Lake in several categories but in the last two games, Gray has been watching the games from the bench as she nurses an ankle and a chance to get back in the lineup as this campaign comes down to the last 3 games.
Canyon Lake and Gonzales are fighting for that 4th place slot and assuming the Apaches won their Friday contest then they are presently a game and a half from tying your Hawks.
A game to watch for would be the Navarro vs. Gonzales game this coming Friday .
If Navarro wins that game then it will clinch a spot for the Hawks, counting on a CL win over Cuero this Tuesday.
On the Boy’s side, Canyon Lake lost another close game to Navarro as this team needs just a few more bounces going their way in order to turn the tide and help push for a playoff spot.
Canyon Lake is presently sitting in fourth place behind, Navarro-Wimberley-La Vernia triad.
The Hawks have played all three teams to the wire and are looking for the right combination to get into the safe and find their reward.
This week Canyon Lake will be on the road in Cuero and then another big game this coming Friday when Wimberley comes to town. If CL can rise for that game, then they too will be able to lay claim at the very least to that 4th playoff spot in district play.
Canyon Lake has four games remaining as their season starts to come a close and a chance to put their stamp on the first playoff game ever for the Boy’s Basketball team.
It could get rocky if CL loses to the teams ahead of them as that would pit them against Yoakum on that last game with a chance to get the keys for extra games.
Boy’s Soccer finished last week with a 2-0 record and winning both games by an identical 2-1 score.
In their win over La Vernia, Grayson Rohrbacher scored both goals and then Mike Thorpe copied that feat with two goals in the win over Lampasas.
CL Varsity will play at San Marcos Academy on Tuesday and host Burnet on Friday. The Boy’s Junior Varsity will play a home game with Burbank starting at 5pm.
With two winnable games the Hawks can get their winning streak up to 5 games which is more games than the Hawks have won for a season since their ’09-’10 year.
Yes, the Boy’s 5-4 season record has already matched their most wins in a season which gives you a notion this year might be something special for Canyon Lake.
The Girl’s Soccer team won their game over Smithville on Tuesday and they will have a home game this week on Tuesday with Burnet.
CL’s Ladies have a 5-2-1 record and will look to keep adding to that total as they dribble their way to district play starting on February 19th.
Softball will have their first scrimmage this Thursday at home and Tennis will have their JV in action that same day as they will travel to Georgetown.
Tis the season as Baseball, Track and other sports start up for the Spring.
Keep posted to The ReSporter and any pictures would be welcomed for future articles.
Go Hawks!!
