CL Hawks Takes Care of Flatonia and Harper

Canyon Lake wakes up in time to get a two game winning streak after the second day of games as the Hawks win last games against Harper and Flatonia.

In that first game, the Hawks, had to rally for a tie as a 5-0 lead was reduced to a 2 run deficit as the game’s time limit was starting to close out the affair.

Alexis Robinson started the 5th inning with a double and then Kat Weber would single Robinson home as CL still needed at least one more score to tie this game.

That hit came from the bat of Bailey Bryan and she was left stranded on third base as Canyon Lake just could not close the game out.

It was just the second tie in the Hawks history as last season was when the other tied game was played.

Robinson would also hit her 8th home-run in the next inning as she has had a hot bat all season as she has a 1.040 slugging percentage so far during the first 11 games.

Not too shabby.

Canyon Lake then opened up their game with Flatonia with 3 runs in the first inning off of just one hit from Weber as the Hawk speed was evident throughout this contest.

CL finished with 10 stolen bases as the bases looked like a merry-go-round at the school play area as Hawks would keep the pressure on as Canyon Lake had 7 different players to steal a base.

Robinson was in a zone for this game as Flatonia did not record a hit in the 4 inning game and had just 3 base runners for the contest.

Another good sign in this win was how few errors CL accounted for as that stat only showed one error against Flatonia.

Canyon Lake continued their hot streak as they disposed of the Harper Longhorns in the third game with an 8-5 win.

Maggie Banks won this game and Lauren Mentzer got her first save as she pitched a gem after two Harper players were left stranded on 3rd and 2nd base after reaching those places with no outs.

Strike-outs were Mentzer’s best friend as she also zeroed in protecting what was a one run lead, 6-5 at the time.

Head Coach John Gallagher commented on what it means to have more than one pitcher to go to, “They were touching Maggie (Banks) and it was a good time to make the change.”

The Hawks scored two more runs to help seal the deal and help make Coach Gallagher look like a guru on handling pitchers.

Carly Dubois has been manning the lead-off hitter for three years now and this speed demon has finally started getting her groove back as she has a .810 on base percentage during the last 4 games.

“A lot of the time I had been doing wrong batting techniques and since Coach told me what I needed to do, I have been thinking through what I need to do,” Dubois said. “Now I immediately go over what I need to do and that allows me to put the ball down.”

What you might not realize, is when the ball gets down Dubois will be on first before the defense many times gets to her hit.

Dubois has also been the main cog in the outfield and her speed allows her defense to track down a lot of balls for outs.

“I am making sure I am there and behind them and I tell them to go all out,” Dubois said in response on how she is helping her cohorts in the outfield as this season starts to mature. “We need to get our memory going and get our confidence back up.”

Good words as Canyon Lake will now continue a run that hopefully will keep going.

Canyon Lake now has gone 4 games without a loss as one more game on Saturday morning when Seminole comes to the Hawk nest for the Hawks last Tournament game for this week at 8am.
