Opening Day Curtains for Softball this Week

Canyon Lake’s Softball team will start this week with games that will count as the Hawks  travel to Burnet this Tuesday with the JV starting things off with a 5pm first pitch.

At 7pm, this year’s Varsity edition will take their first steps on realizing a goal many of the other Hawk sports teams have realized this season in making the playoffs.

After this opening game, CL will then play 6 games in the Navarro tournament starting this Thursday-Friday-Saturday.

A week later, the Hawks, will host their tournament with Wimberley with 5 games on tap.

during the first week of March.

If the weather holds off, then Canyon Lake will have 18 games under their belt going into this year’s District 26-4A round robin.

Canyon Lake has the most depth according to Head Coach John Gallagher as this team actually has 3 pitchers. Yes, a position that has never been blessed with an abundance of players and now CL will have 3 girls that can pitch from the circle.

Last year, Freshman Lauren Mentzer was not at full strength to start the season and so with a healthy staff, will now help CL engage their opponents from a strength not seen before at the Hawk Nation.

“Our pitching has been very strong against Luling and Harper,” Coach Gallagher pitched. “All three pitchers have complimented each other and have done a very good job of keeping those teams off balance.”

Now you have Alexis Robinson finishing her career as a Senior and then being in position to have two more pitchers during the season will help in capitalizing on the potential of having fresh arms throughout this year’s schedule.

Going back to Canyon Lake’s only softball playoff, fireballer Missy Romero was the only horse that season and you could just tell that her Junior year had been a hard ride as she was not the same pitcher during the playoffs that she was as the games had just started.

Pitching non-stop throughout all of those games, finally played out with a 2 game sweep at the hands of Lampasas.

This year’s club will also feature more speed and more depth up and down the line-up and having players that can keep innings going for those knock-out punches needed many times in winning games.

“I feel like we are finding our starting lineup but it has been because these girls are working hard and we have some depth this year which is really nice,” Coach Gallagher said with a smile on his face. “We have four girls vying for middle infield spots as well as nailing down two outfield positions.”

On how the offense has been stacking up, “Our offense has been consistent and is progressing,” Coach Gallagher assessed. “We have the capability of 1-9 producing and depending on where we hit them in the lineup….we have more team speed this year which gives us some good options.”

Last year’s biggest shortcoming was on the defensive side of play, “Our defense has been sharp thus far and we are working on staying aggressive to the ball and minimizing errors….we have some good arms in the outfield which will help us get more plays at the bases.”

Now the curtain will rise on this years team and The ReSporter is waiting at the bit to see just what type of team the Hawks will have this time around.

Go Hawks!!
