Canyon Lake will come back from Spring Break this week and this year’s track team for both the boys and girls has some potential to make some noise as those last weeks approach before District 26-4A Meet, April 6-7.

Last year, CL’s, dash events did not present a lot of opportunities for scoring. Joseph Ruiz had the best 100 meter dash coming in with a 11.58 time.

That result was the 11th best at the end of last year’s meets.

Taking a look at this season will give you an idea of how Canyon Lake has improved in this one event.

Six Hawk’s are in the top 11 this season with a couple more added on using 15 as a target line for comparison.

                  name time rank when
                  Joseph Ruiz 11.39 3rd 2.20
                  Kenneth Jowers 11.44 4th 2.20
                  Landry Moore 11.49 6th 2.20
                  Tanner Faris 11.55 8th 3.09
                  Trenton Lorett 11.55 8th 3.09
                  Matt Adams 11.57 11th 3.09
                  Haden Lee 11.62 13th 3.03
                  Austin Brennan 11.66 14th 3.09

By using your basic math skills you can deduce that CL has more athletes this year compared to last season in the speed category.

What can Canyon Lake take from these results? Depth out the Wazoo…..

The Hawks will be going into this week’s meet in Wimberley with the ability to score points up and down the event list, whether you are talking about throwing a discus or running the 100 meter dash.

One of those athletes above was Freshman Landry Moore who ran his event during that first meet.

An injury, later that same day, during the 4×200 meter relay, sidelined this young man who seemed poised for a good year.

“My best time last year was 11.98,” Sprinter Moore recalled. “I was amazed and was so happy after I heard what my time was after the race.”

Moore had improved on his last season’s time as an 8th grader, by 1/2  a second, which translates into a good feat with this being the shortest event.

“I was not going into this race with a lot of confidence,” Moore said in response to how he felt his time would be on that first meet.

With Canyon Lake’s, wealth of fast athletes, will give Head Coach Troy Moses many options as some of these younger athletes could be moved up to Varsity for the district meet since the JV squad is nice, but scoring points is the biggest goal.

That would be a great option for Coach Moses in getting CL in an opportunity to have a chance to win District 26-4A.

“We have a collection of fast runners,” Moore said with more speed. “I had trouble with my hip in the last meet and so Coach did not want me to chance competing and hurting myself,  so I am hoping my hip gets better so I can sprint.”

Moore’s injury on February 20 happened on the second leg of the 4×200 meter relay.

“I stepped on the back of (Kenneth) Jowers foot….Our handoff was not good and when I stepped on his foot he moved and it caused my shoe to pull and then I turned my ankle,” Moore said, “That was the first time I had an injury running track.”

Now Moore has a question mark on his year so far, as that first meet was over a month ago and the window to show the Coaches what he can do has narrowed.

“I really am hoping I can get my practices going this week and show what I can do in Wimberley,” Moore said some Moore.

Canyon Lake can now tinker with their athletes on how they can improve their chances of scoring points in each of the events.

With the 100, 200, and 400 meter dash, Canyon Lake, can also use that speed in the three relay events. Each athlete can be in 3 running events and by looking at all those names above, then you will understand how intricate, Coach Moses and the rest of the staff can maneuver this group.

Athletes like Lester Boehme are lightning fast but CL has Boehme running in all three of the relays.

Fun times for the Hawks as this problem is a welcome based on those earlier years when Coaches were hoping enough athletes would want to run track to give the Hawks that one ingredient that is needed for the big prize, Depth.

“We have a lot of fast guys that are not seniors,” Moore said. “That will help us go farther.”

Well said for a short distance runner, wanting to go farther will give us more depth in those events too!

That Wimberley Meet will be this coming Thursday, on March 24, don’t miss it!!

Go Go Go Hawks!!!
