Bracken’s Sleep Walk becomes Run in Win over Bastrop Tribe, 36-14

Bracken Christian started their next decade of games with a win over Bastrop Tribe Consolidated, 36-14 on the road Friday night. It was Bracken’s 8th opening day win.
Bastrop took their opening drive 60 yards on just 4 plays with a 38 yard pass and run right off the bat.
That jolt would wake up whatever hangover this team had from their scrimmages in a hurry.
“I think what happened at the beginning of the game was they (Bastrop) had some big guys that look like grown man,” Head Coach Hosea Stredic said manly. “They had muscle shirts in pregame than had muscles to go with their shirt.”
That might have been the reason the Bracken Warriors scored their first touchdown in the 2nd Quarter as their sleep walking or playing bigger players seemed to finally wear off.
Bastrop had controlled this game up unto this point as two lost fumbles kept this game within reach.
BTC’s second fumble happened while they were knocking on the door on Bracken’s 5 yard line.

That door knock helped in waking Bracken up and stirred a methodical 65 yard 12 play drive with Lucas McCrum taking the ball in from two yards out.
Paul Nakalanga was good on his first ever pat and the game was tied getting the Warriors back into the game.
Up until that drive Bastrop had outgained Bracken by 56 yards and seemed to be ready to run away with this game.
Bracken held when they needed to and kept this game within striking distance and a missed opportunity by Bastrop to go up two scores before the fumble.
The Warriors passing was not on for much of the game, so Bracken would fashion their first score with a hefty dose of rushing as their 12 play drive had just one pass attempt (an incompletion) with all the yardage on the ground.
Bracken’s tied game did not last long as Bastrop was quick to respond on a 69 yard scoring run on the 2 play 75 yard scoring drive.

Now this game would get serious and the Bracken Warriors would get one more score before halftime when Presley Day took the rock from 10 yards out and a 14 all tie.
That first half had 62 total plays as both teams had to be ready for a longer half-time show to get that needed rest.
Bracken would come from their break and take over this hard fought affair in scoring 22 unanswered points.
“Their Coach said that our guys played good and our legs were stronger then theirs,” Coach Stredic said proudly. “There offense did some things different and so we started using five guys on the line of scrimmage and it made their QB nervous.”
Their were only 5 completions for Bracken but the Warriors were able to make two of them count for scores in the 3rd Quarter as Brady Beene was able to find Reese Smith twice for a score.
The longest completion was to Reese for 10 yards on the first score and most of those other passes thrown the QB’s were dumping the ball to not loose yardage.
BCS opened up to the spread in that second half which had Beene with his most rushing plays for his career.
Noble Simmons played a Disciplined Defense in win over Bastrop Consolidated
Going into the game Beene had 42 total carries for 241 yards. In a Winston game last year Beene had 145 yards of that career total.
“Brady (Beene) came to me and told me what he was seeing on the field and so for the first time in my coaching career I allowed a player to call the plays in the first game of the season,” Coach Stredic said with wisdom.
This game will be chalked up for Bracken’s defense as Noble Simmons lead the Warriors with pressure tackles and sacks. When the Warriors needed to make a stop then the bend but don’t break rule would apply.
“Simmons played very good disciplined tonight,” Stredic heaped praise. “That is, he (Simmons) did not worry about someone else job and knew he had one responsibility and that made it easier for him playing that way.”
Simmons certainly was all over the field and getting pressure on the Tribe’s QB was key to their many mistakes in the game.
Bastrop was only able to convert 10% of their 3rd down plays which would be one of the telling stats for this win.
The better stat was BCS holding Bastrop Warriors to a one for nine success rate on 4th down tries.
Game—Set—Match as the Bracken defense woke up in time to take this game for having nice dreams for their next sleep walking episode.
Hopefully the sleep walking will progress to sleep running which should help as the season starts to mature.
