Canyon Lake Cooks up Some Good Grub in Win over Poth

Landry Hollum has break out game in win over Poth Pirates

Landry Hollum has break out game in win over    Poth Pirates

The Hawks flew into Poth and feasted on the Pirates, as the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity all flew out with wins.

Canyon Lake’s Varsity jumped out quickly on Poth in their first set by scoring 13 points off of serves with the Hawks first four servers.

Senior Regan Mickey and Faith Hasness had an opportunity of serving 5 times while Hanna White crossed the serving line for 3 points.

Those rallies allowed CL to increase their lead to 10 points, 19-9 and cruise to a final score of 25-17.

Only 2 service errors and a total of 5 unforced turnovers was the key to this fast start.

The Varsity carried that momentum into their next set with another convincing, 25-18 victory in much the same fashion.

One service error and 6 unforced turnovers was the ingredient again for this win.

In that 3rd set, Coach Kim Paisley started with some mass substituting and the communication ceased and so did the lead as Poth took advantage early with a 4 point lead, 9-5 and that lead would stay constant throughout this set.

Since, The ReSporter, is reporting what helped win, then here is what helped in this loss.

How bout 11 unforced errors and 5 service errors. That volume of errors never allowed CL to have a chance of climbing back into the 3rd set and that eventual loss.

That final was, 21-25 and a heart to heart talk on how to finish this perennial Volleyball Champion team in check so the match would not go 5 games.

In that 4th set, Canyon Lake, went back to their old dominating ways and finished off the Pirates, 25-18 and a solid victory.

Once again, the calling card, was in having just 1 service error to go with 4 unforced turnovers. That recipe will always cause the Hawks to rise and on this night take a win home on their bus.

Canyon Lake was crisp and sharp as these two teams had some great volleys but the Hawks used their depth and playing skills to win on this night.

Landry Hollums was one of many Hawks that seemed to raise her game on this night.

Hollums had her best night with 7 kills with most of those points in the first two sets.

“I just went out there and played,” Hollums said calmly. “Coach wants us to take it and I want to take the outside spot and just wanted to do it tonight.”

Hollums also commented on how in tune this team was after their practice on Monday.

“Our practice stayed intense yesterday and it was a good practice,” Hollums surmised. “Now we just need to stay that way.”

“We had a stellar practice yesterday,” Coach Paisley carbon copied. “And that is what contributed to our win tonight.”

Another item to take note, was seeing how CL was able to improve after facing a lot of 6A and 5A schools in their last tournament and using that as a spring board in this conquest.

Intensity proves to be a key ingredient for future games and by all accounts, the players seemed to enjoy what they cooked up on this night.
