CL Looking Past and Forward for the Ladies Sports
Canyon Lake has not only been fed some stellar athletes for the boys, but the girls these past few years has also been very accomplished coming out of Mountain Valley Middle School too.
The ReSporter had a conversation with Girl’s Athletic Director John Gallagher to get the scoop.
The ReSporter: Hey Coach Gallagher give us your overall opinion on last year’s sports for the ladies.
Coach John Gallagher: “This year was a success throughout the athletic program. All of our female athletes worked very hard both in-season and off-season in the athletic period. As a whole our female athletes recorded improvement their strength, speed, and agility through a detailed workout program implemented by our coaches. There was also a higher level of academic achievement with many of our athletes being named to All-District Academic honors.”
The ReSporter: The Volleyball team set the bar high when they won the School’s first District Championship.
Girls AD John Gallagher: “The Girls Volleyball jumped off the charts with winning the schools first district title and going undefeated in District 26 4-A and landing several individual honors.”
The ReSporter: Tell us about the other Hawk teams.
Girls AD John Gallagher: “The Cross Country team had a good season and advanced the Boys Team to the regional meet. This was followed by Girls Basketball who played well and qualified for playoffs.”
The ReSporter: That was a decent Fall with so many athletes upping their game.
Girls AD John Gallagher: “The Girls Soccer also had a great year and made it to the second round of the playoffs while the Girls Softball had a strong start and played hard through a tough district but missed the playoffs.”
The ReSporter: Give us your thoughts on how the Girl’s Track team had their best season ever.
Girls AD John Gallagher: “Girls Track continued to be a force by producing several individual winners and setting school records in the District, Area, and Regional meets. Girls Golf continued to improve their play and be competitive and will return a strong team next season.”
The ReSporter: Look forward as we have already seen a strong Volleyball team that looks to have a decent chance of winning their second Championship in a row.
Girls AD John Gallagher: “I am looking forward to the 2016-17 school year and excited about our incoming freshman class. They will definitely add some athleticism to all our girls programs.”
“Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, and Soccer will all get some good skilled athletes who will push to compete right away.”
“The softball team will benefit from a group of girls that went undefeated in the Comal ISD Middle School Softball District.”
The ReSporter: This has the potential of being CL’s best year for the girls sports. Give the Hawk Nation one more sound bite about some of those girls that blazed the trail for all the newcomers.
Girls AD John Gallagher: “Bailey Drum is probably the most accomplished female athlete we have had the past four years and possibly the entire time that Canyon Lake High School has been open. Bailey has excelled in Volleyball, Basketball, and Track and has earned numerous honors. Twice she has earned the “Female Athlete of the Year” award. And her work ethic and athleticism have been outstanding. She will continue to play volleyball while attending Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.”
“Emma Gray was a welcome surprise to our volleyball, basketball, and track programs. As a senior she was a dominant performer, helping both the volleyball and basketball teams make playoff appearances. In track she qualifying for Regionals’ by competing in high Jump and on the 4 x 200 relay team. Who knows what her contributions could have been if she had been at C.L. all four years.”
“Volleyball set the standard last season by going undefeated and winning a district title. That will give all our teams something to shoot for this next school year along with planting the seed of confidence that winning in a new district will be expected.”
“I expect Coach Paisley and her volleyball team to continue its drive to repeat. Even with key performers graduated this will be a very talented and competitive squad. I see no reason why this team will not make a strong run and get back into the playoffs again.”
“During the summer months most of our athletes played club sports, working out at speed and strength camp or doing summer workouts from their coaches. We hve seen improvement each year in our returning athletes by what they are doing during the summer. It’s important to keep up a workout regiment as well as having fun and enjoying their time away from school.”
The ReSporter: Thanks Coach Gallagher and we will look with anticipation as these girls reach for the stars as they continue or just start their High School Career. Thanks for your time with the students.
