Hawks Clear Cobwebs and Sweep Friday’s Games at Tex-Fest Tourney
Canyon Lake Volleyball rebounded by winning 4 games on opening day at Wimberley Tex-Fest tournament.
The day started at 9am as CL seemed to be in a daze or still asleep as the Hawks had a lot of unforced errors but this game was turned around as Landry Hollums served for 6 straight points helping erase a 3 point deficit and a win, 25-22.
Hollums was able to get her two aces in during that comeback as Kaylie Duke and Regan Mickey helped with a kill each.
Canyon Lake were still shaky playing Caddo Mills in the first game, but after getting cobwebs cleared the Hawks had their most convincing win of the year getting separation and then pouring it on against the Foxes’ winning by 14 points.
In their third game, CL faced another undefeated Pool team in Johnson City as the winner would lay claim to having an inside track finishing on top in their Pool.
Canyon Lake continued by beating the Eagles by 11 points and then finishing their 3rd sweep on the day with a, 25-22 victory.
Cuero would be the final game on Friday and an old foe for the past 2 years would not hold a match against the Hawks.
Canyon Lake beat Cuero convincingly in two sets and now have a 6-0 all time record with the Gobblers.
The Hawks started slow but with each game the communication would help in sweeping the day with all comers.
Some shaky stanzas starting with Marion, as CL first lead was scored on the second rotation on a Savanna Cox 3 point rally in getting a, 15-14 lead.
The advantage was short lived as the Bulldogs were able to keep the pressure on by increasing their lead to three points, 19-22.
That was when Landry Hollums would start her serve with an Ace and the Hawks followed by winning the last 6 points for the win.
“We were not awake and hitting errors hurt us,” Head Coach Kim Paisley stated. “We were much crisper and started running a stronger offense in the second set.”
Canyon Lake has also proven they can put a pretty stout defense on the front line as blocks were once again prevalent with this four game sweep.
Sophomore Paige Bower and new comer Junior Anna Bettersworth are proving to be good additions during the early season.
“I think we started with more energy after our slow start,” Bower said. “If we can continue then we should do pretty well.”
Bettersworth finished the day with 9 blocks and now has over 20 in just a six game period.
“It starts with instincts,” Bettersworth said better. “There are more things to think about but we are becoming smarter.”
Canyon Lake will lace their shoes on Saturday morning at 10am in the Gold Bracket at the Wimberley main gym.
