Canyon Lake Freshman continue a season filled with wins as they continued their Gold Consolation Tournament victory in the Tex-Fest last weekend to a win over 6A Austin Akins, 25-5 and 25-14.

In that first set, Cassidy Felps had 4 aces as the Hawks zoomed out for a 11-1 lead that would only get worse for the Akins Eagles.

On that first serve, CL, also was helped by two kills from Caroline Kullberg and one kill by a hit from Taylor Fillinger.

The Hawks did not finish one rotation as it took just 4 CL servers to serve a loss to the Eagles.

Kalani Thorpe finished the set with 7 serves for the win as Alisia Niestemski and Kayla Wunderlich both contributed kills in the clincher rally.

In the second set, Akins awoke and started this round with a 4-0 lead as Canyon Lake seemed to be taking on the same situation that presented itself in last week’s loss to Navarro.

In that contest, Canyon Lake, beat the Panthers like no bodies business only to lose the game after not being able to regain that same dominance in that first set blow out.

“That Navarro game opened our eyes,” Thorpe said like an optometrist. “We went out expecting to do the same thing and we did not play as sweet and we found that it is hard to turn it back on.”

Thorpe and the rest of the Freshman crew would wake up in that second deciding set as they outscored Akins, 25-10 after their first barrage of points.

With the score razor thin, 8-7 for the Hawks, Laney Heun would reel off 8 serves for the separation and eventual 11 point victory.

That 8 point killer rally had a kill from Felps and a block for Fillinger.

“We needed to step it up and play our game,” Caroline Kullberg stated on what the team was thinking as the Eagles went up with the first 4 points in that second set. “When we make passes then that helps us stay confident.”

On how this team looks at their upcoming district games, Kullberg said confidently, “I think we will be real good in district if we can live up to our potential.”

That is definitely good news for the Hawk Nation as the last Freshman team to win district just graduated with a District Title and lots of wins in their suit case.

Canyon Lake will hope to continue their winning ways when they return to Wimberley to take on the Texan’s this Friday.

Go Hawks and Beat Wimberley!!
