Hawks JV fumbled away a win in their game with Akins last Wednesday at the Hawks Nest, 28-30.

Canyon Lake started with a fumble on their first drive and continued that trend through the rest of this contest.

The Hawks scored on their second possession as Connor Rose returned to the line-up after missing the past two games. Rose scored from the 8 yard line and finished the game with 72 yards.

This Akins JV team was undefeated coming into this game and escaped by the skin on their teeth when they scored leaving 30 seconds on the fourth quarter clock.

Akins would tie the score after that first Hawk touchdown with a 13 play and 70 yard drive. There were 7 pass plays with the longest going for 13 yards on this drive.

Canyon Lake would fumble on their next drive when this miscue jumped into the air having Akins linebacker Chalpa catching and running to paydirt giving the Eagles a quick two scores and lead, 14-8.

CL would drive to the Eagles 16 yard line when the second fumble of this drive was lost and another scoring opportunity squelched.

It seemed the Hawks righted their ship when their defense stopped the Eagles and then took their next drive to the end-zone to start the 2nd half, when Nick McCormick took the ball over with his 5 yard run, 14-14.

Akins would reciprocate in kind with a 73 yard drive this time and the Eagles QB Brown running to TD heaven and the lead going back into Akins grasp.

Canyon Lake responded with another drive for a score with Josh Colgan (55 yards) scoring and getting the Hawks back with in striking distance, 22-20 Eagle lead.

On the next kick-off, Akins misplayed the ball and Canyon Lake recovered on the Eagles 17 yard line with a chance to retake the lead that was last seen in the first quarter. There was plenty of time still on the clock, showing 7 minutes remaining.

Colgan would score from one yard out and with McCormick scoring the two point conversion the Hawks had the lead, 28-22.

There was still 3:29 left in the contest and Akins would take advantage of all those seconds when Brown would score again for Akins and his two point pass giving the visitors the lead and win.

This game was not a total loss as a 6A Junior Varsity club that is undefeated would not be a reason to hang your head. Canyon Lake should be getting some more reinforcements with more Hawks being suited up next week with their game with Eastside Memorial and their first district game.

That is the ultimate goal is winning the JV District Crown and this Hawk team has a chance to continue that resume stuffing chance as the season reaches it’s last lap.

Go Hawks and Beat Eastside Memorial.
