CL Hawks JV Football Juniors Lead Way over Steele, 22-6

The CL JV middle line backer Micheal Harwell blitzed right up the middle on Cibolo Steele’s first offensive play for a 6 yard sack and that was a precursor of how the game would go for the D -1 6A JV (B) Steels football team. “ I’m glad I’m here getting the reps on JV to make myself better player on Varsity, just anything to make me a better football player” spouted mike linebacker Harwell. The Hawks held Steele to a paltry 12 yards in the first half as the offense swallowed up the clock during the first half of play with two continuous drives.

Steele’s size and speed was halted during the first half as the first two possessions went three and out with two booming punts of 42 and 45 yards.

However, that just gave the Hawks more room to run the Slot “T” offense to the discouragement of the Steele’s defense.  Steele did not have a clue as to effectively halt an offense which most likely anyone playing with a helmet had ever seen before. On several occasions Caleb Almond or Rolando Maronge ran right by linebackers who were looking the other way, a true sign of a well run Slot –T offense.

As with most 5A and 6A schools, never see a Slot-T offense, as most larger schools in that divisional range run a spread of sorts or variances thereof. Seeing a well run Slot-T can be confusing when trying to defend against it for the first time.

The Hawk offense fumbled once at close range after a long drive and did not score on the opening drive, but the damage was done as the clock was down around the 2minute mark on the opening drive leaving Steele with a quick three and out and a punt, thus the end of the first quarter was all CLJV.

Dylan Forehand, Micheal Harwell, Nick McCormick, Zane Fullen, Keaton Rhea and Josh Barnett led the defense as top tacklers all evening.

Steele had their chances but a costly holding call brought back a 23 yard run on a drive and as can be deduced, that’s why it was a 23 yard run.

The Knights did get on the board early in the 3rd quarter with a drive which had gains of 10,20, and 30 yards as the Hawks missed tackles and shifty moves. However the twp point attempt fell short as the rush forced a bad throw by the Knight rolling quarterback.

Canyon Lake drove down the field with Maronge and Josh Colgan moving behind Dylan Sheppard, Nathan Deleon, Jesse Ruiz and Sheldon Flint as Almond kicked in a TD late in the third quarter, the 2 point conversion was converted by the Junior Andrew Nelson as this lineman got into the act showing very capable hands and route execution for the big man. “We run that play to me in practice quite a bit , but I never thought Coach would call my number in a game and give me the chance to score, it was great to have my first score today”, Nelson commented.

Its seems that getting quality time for the Hawks football machine has paid off as the last season’s boom in the program have numbers that have increased at each level, as the coaching staff has picked up games where everyone is getting reps which equals out to a better overall program this season, so goes the mantra.

Canyon Lake’s defense rose to the occasion several times halting the high powered Knights offense holding them to a total of 112 yards of total offense, much of that coming on the final drive of the game as the Knights were trying to post a late score.

However CL’s mean Green defensive machine flipped the switch and turned out the lights on the Knights and well,…the Knight was over 22-6!

CL Hawk’s JV now takes a win away in Cibolo and will be on the road to end their season in Taylor next week with a chance to win district if they can pluck the duck Slot-T style.
