It did not take long for CLJV to get the rust off after the first quarter and for the next 3 quarters score 38 points against Fredericksburg in a run-a-way win, 38-8.

“They (CL) fought hard and this game was a testament to them as this season has been tough,” Coach Bret Hodges said. “We are proud of them.”

Fredericksburg took the opening kick-off and after taking 5 minutes off the clock after driving 51 yards, the Hawk’s, stopped the Billies’ runner one yard short of a first down on the Canyon Lake’s 4 yard line.

It would take the running Hawks 11 plays to drive 111 yards for their first score. How did Canyon Lake have more yardage than the football field is long was adding up penalty yardage assessed on this drive.

Five different running backs had a chance to advance the ball on the drive and then Connor Rose broke a 33 yard scamper for that first score and, 8-0 lead.

The Hawk defense stopped Freddie with negative yards on their next time with the ball and after a 50 yard Fredericksburg punt had CL with more running to up their lead, 14-0.

This second drive had a Nick McCormick 41 yard run as he barreled through the line as Billies were bouncing off of McCormick like ball in a pen-ball machine. (ask your parents)

Canyon Lake’s JV went into half-time by dominating statistics as the 3 game losing streak would soon be history as the second half would start with another run-a-way touchdown on just 3 plays and scoring with just one minute and 27 seconds clicking off the clock.

Rolando Maronge had two of those carries for 41 yards right up the middle and his score for a 22 point lead.

Fredericksburg would have their one and only scoring drive next, as the Billies moved 68 yards on 9 plays to pull back to within 14 points, 22-08.

The Hawks made the game a little more interesting when they fumbled on their next possession, giving Fredericksburg another chance to get within smelling distance of the Hawks.

A Zane Fullen interception put a stop to that Billie drive and with Fullen’s return to the mid-field stripe. Canyon Lake would snap the ball 5 times on this possession, with that final run coming from Caleb Almond for 24 yards and a clinching score.

Fullen had plays all over the field on this night and that tenacity was needed to jump start this JV team to finish the season strong.

“We were more motivated because of our losing streak,” Fullen said. “In our last game with Boerne we got beat deep and we were just not going to give them big plays and stay disciplined.”

That was certainly seen on this night as that discipline finished the game with a run-a-way score.

Almond had his punishing runs up the middle, but on his scoring play he led with his quickness and speed in crossing the goal line and Hawk, 30-08 lead.

“We had been on a losing streak and we needed to get back into it,” Almond said with joy. “This whole team hurts when we lose and this is the time that we need to step it up and the coaches told us that it starts in the class room and then on the athletic field.”

Those steps, Almond mentioned, became running steps and that led to a dominating contest on both sides of the ball.

There was another hot potato time during the game as CL forced a fumble on the kick-off and then fumbled on their first play after that recovery.

The Billies would reciprocate with a fumble two plays later that would have Josh Colgan with a chance of finishing off Fredericksburg from 6 yards out for a 30 point lead and game, 38-8.

Running back on track was the goal and that running game was all that was needed in this win as the JV Hawks will now play this next Thursday to make up for a lost game three weeks ago.

Having a 9 yard per rush average will result in a win as the defense was able to clamp down on these Billies for that complete victory.

Congrats Hawks!!
