Volleyball’s Freshman Finish Season with District Title
Canyon Lake’s Freshman Volleyball squad wins District 28-4A in grand fashion in sweep of Bandera for the season finale.
As far as this group of Freshman play, their games usually involve some form of drama but on this final night for the season, a Hawk win was a sweep without much resistance.
Resistance was ‘futile’, taking a little Star Trek the Next Generation lingo for the parents.
You can tell one thing is pretty clear with this group as they do not like to lose and with a loss in their last game with Fredericksburg, getting that game out of their system was accomplished with a, 25-16 and 25-15 sweep.
That Billies loss would be the only blemish on this District title run.
Taylor Fillinger helped serve up a helping with a 9 point rally as her arm was iced down after Bandera won a point. The Hawk lead was a commanding 16-4 lead and coasting would be the mode of transportation to finish that first set.
Caroline Kullberg led the Hawks with 8 kills for the night and many of those sets were hit with some degree of authority especially as CL was in the process of finishing this night quickly.
“I had to get the kill,” Kullberg said when responding what she was thinking before each of those kills. “Sometimes I miss but I have to keep hitting.”
This Freshman squad is very reminiscent of a group of ladies that graduated last year that help put CL’s Volleyball team on the map.
“We don’t like to lose and we like to build and get even better,” Kullberg said with conviction. “Next year we want to become undefeated District Champs!”
In that second set it was another Fillinger service rally as the Hawks opened up their 3 point lead to a coasting 7 point advantage. Another ace for Fillinger and a Kullberg kill highlighted this run.
Going down the stretch, Alisia Niesttemski would be the final player to serve this season with two aces and another Kullberg kill that put the finishing touches to a well deserved District 28-4A Championship.
“This was the best season since I have been coaching here,” Head Freshman Coach Tosha Ridgeway said with a broad smile. “They were competitive from the get go and they are Volleyball serious and they hate to lose.”
Kind of sums up what goes into being a champion and the Hawk Nation will look forward to seeing what else this group of ladies can bring back to the Hawk Trophy Case!!
Go Hawks!!
