Canyon Lake will need to use mirrors in their next game with the Taylor Ducks as they once again took a win home after a Hawk 17 point lead during the first half that was decimated in the 2nd quarter and an eventual Duck win, 50-44.

“We knew they would be good,” Head Coach Charley Drum said after the game. “We came out ready to play but it is a new season now.”

CL finished their regular season with 7 wins while finishing 2nd in District 14-4A with a date next week against Liberty Hill.

The Hawks started the game like they needed to with a 75 yard drive that had no play gaining more than 8 yards. Canyon Lake had 15 snaps and took 8 minutes off the clock in grand Slot-T fashion.

Taylor followed that drive with a first play fumble on a pass that would allow the Hawks a chance for another score. Which they did as Austin Brennan went 29 yards on this drive which ended with a Micah St. John 2 yard run and a quick Hawk, 14 point lead.

The Hawk defense would hold on the Duck’s next possession and a 62 yard punt would have CL setting up shop on their 20 yard line to start the 2nd quarter.

A good start to this contest had the Hawks allowing just 5 yards of total offense in that first quarter while CL ran for 115 yards with a 14 point lead.

That defensive stop for Canyon Lake would the final time Taylor would not score on a drive not counting the halftime clock doing it’s job once. Of course having just one half-time per game would hold that number down.

Meanwhile, CL started their second stanza with two series of downs with nothing but two punts while Taylor would continue their scoring blitz to the final gun.

The Hawks continued their streak of scoring over 40 points but on this night it was not good enough as a 51 point game was needed for this win.

Tanner Faris had a first in Hawk history when he topped the century mark by receiving and rushing for this game.

Micah St. John topped the century rushing mark as well as CL would finish with 356 yards but that 3rd quarter with no points contributed to the downfall on Senior Night at the Hawk Nest.

That 22 point run by Taylor to start the second half helped the Ducks take their first lead but Canyon Lake was not finished as their offense woke up in the 4th quarter.

With a 6 point deficit, the Hawks, would have another long 15 play drive with the longest run being the last, when St. John bulled through to the end zone from 12 yards out putting CL back into this game with a one point advantage, 37-36.

Needing to respond to another Duck score, Canyon Lake would drive 75 yards on 10 snaps with two explosive plays of 21 yards by Faris and then a Jacob Ruff 15 yard run for the score which tied the game, 44-44.

That score would leave 1:05 on the scoreboard clock as the best hope for a CL win would be an overtime game.

Taylor had other ideas as their offensive juggernaut would continue dissecting the Hawks secondary as they closed out the game with a 37 yard pass and run that left Canyon Lake with to little time for a chance of a score.

Andre Jones was too hard to bring down on that last play as this Duck ran through the Hawks for the winning score.

This is the 3rd loss to Taylor, as each game has been a bitter pill to swallow and this game took the cake as this year, Canyon Lake, would be left at the starting blocks. Taylor would take their bus ride home with a District 14-4A trophy.

One thing that is known is the game with the Hawks looking in that mirror agains as Liberty Hill has the same offense as CL and it should be another classic battle.

Quarterback Ben Fulton has been very efficient this season as the Hawks averaged over 40 points per contest and this offense has been orchestrated by the Junior QB. Fulton’s passing skills as well as his ability in directing the offense has been keen in scoring points in bunches.

“We both run the same offense,” Junior Fulton said. “We know all the offensive gadgets and whoever is more aggressive and wants it more will win…..Everyone has been waiting for this week since the end of last season and we want to bring home the Gold Ball with a win.”

“This is a new beginning,” St. John said like one of his power runs. “We have to set this game aside and work harder and work on eliminating our mistakes.”

Stay tuned to the ReSporter as there will be an announcement soon to the whereabouts of the Bi-District contest next week.
