The start of Sub-Varsity Girls Basketball was on full throttle last Tuesday night as these two teams swept the Lehman Lobos at the Hawk Nest.

The ReSporter could only attend one game but seeing some of the JV 1 squad game the Hawk enthusiasts would certainly noticed a difference with the level of play as this Hawk team walloped the Lobos, 48-31.

Head JV 1 Coach Jimmy Chamberlin when asked after the game about this Hawk team said, “We scored points,” with a broad smile seen from ear to ear.

In past campaigns, Canyon Lake has struggled to score 48 points in multiple games added together and this exhibition showed again on how talented this group of Freshman girls have been.

Head Girls Basketball Coach Zach Burleson has changed the teams up and combined Sophomore and Freshman girls in forming two teams. The JV 1 team would be considered the true JV squad as this group of ladies have several Freshman players in the line-up.

The JV 2 Team is also peppered with many freshman and a few of the other grades to make up this roster.

This year’s Varsity started their schedule on this same night with 2 Freshman players on that roster, giving Hawk fans an idea of just how deep this freshman crew is in comparison to the other grades.

This 17 point win will speaks for itself.

With the JV 2 team, Canyon Lake was also victorious as this Hawk team held on for a 3 point win over the Lehman Freshman, 28-25.

Emily Geist led the CL scorers with a double/double after scoring 12 points with that same number of rebounds with this win over the Lobos.

CL JV 2 started the game on a hot streak bolting to an, 8-2 lead by the middle of that first quarter of play. Mia Cruz and Geist divided those points up when each player chipped in 4 points a piece.

“I was nervous at first,” Geist said. “But once we got it going we started feeling more comfortable.”

Geist was not finished, “We finally started doing our plays and setting them up and now we will keep this up and get on a winning streak.”

A lot of confidence in this group of girls as they have taken Canyon Lake by storm to start their first athletic year.

Kelli Kacir would have the final points in that first quarter as the Hawks posted a 2 point advantage, 10-8 after the first stanza.

The 2nd quarter started strong when CL increased their lead to, 16-8 after Geist scored 4 more points along with Madison Harwell helping with 2 points during that streak. Harwell was another strong player around the rim finishing 2nd on this night with 8 rebounds for the game.

Canyon Lake would hold on in the second half as the Lobos found their legs and closed the gap by chipping away in each of those final two quarters.

The Hawks never lost their lead however as the 3 point win was as close as Lehman had reached since the 2:35 mark in that first quarter.

A solid game for the Hawks as Canyon Lake did not have enough players to even field a freshman team during their previous year.

Congrats and Go Hawks!!!
