Canyon Lake will advance to their next round after sweeping the Texans, 3-0 in Johnson City on Tuesday night in Bi-District play.

“We had to get over our mental block in facing Wimberley,” Head Volleyball Coach Kimberley Paisley said. “I just wanted the girls to start finishing like they did in the first set and pushing for points.”

This was the Hawks 4th win in a row over Wimberley as CL started the first set with a commanding, 9-1 lead and coasted to a final 6 point win, 25-19 to start this match.

Landry Hollums and Anna Bettersworth were both dominant at the net in that first set as Faith Hasness served the final 5 points for this much needed first set win.

In that second set, the Hawks, regressed, as they committed 7 service errors and had 10 unforced errors which made it a wonder that the CL got to 25 points before the Texans. The saving grace during the second set was seeing Wimberley with the same problems that plagued the Hawks as they matched those errors allowing for a Hawk second set win.

Both teams at the beginning of this set did not establish any offensive points as the serves just alternated in a back and forth ping-pong match.

This second set had 9 ties and 4 lead changes as both teams seemed out of sync.

Canyon Lake’s rotation would finally get Hanna White to the serving line where she continued what she had started in that first set with a 6 serve rally that catapulted the Hawks to a 16-10 lead.

White was involved with 15 service points as CL seemed to have a good feel for their serves which had the Texans with a hard time with their passes in receiving White’s serves.

“I just wanted to get the ball over,” White said when asked what she was thinking during those serves. “This was a good win against our rival and now we get a ‘Gold Ball’.

White was mentioning on what the Hawks will receive when they win playoff games. “We will need to keep the same mindset and keep the intensity, then we will do good on Thursday,” White said in how this Hawk team will prepare for their next game in two days.

Once the Hawks got this lead they would coast for the second set win, 25-21 which would put Canyon Lake within one more set for a sweep.

Wimberley would make this third set more interesting as the Hawks would have a hard time getting their passes down for good sets and a kill.

The Texans raced out to a, 10-4 lead that had a Coach Paisley time-out to help stop the bleeding.

This 3rd set had Sophomore Paige Bower getting some nice assists from Regan Mickey which resulted in 5 kills and a block. Bower also served a 5 point rally that put the Hawks back in the lead and eventual sweep.

“I knew we could do it,” Bower said as the game got close in the 3rd set. “It was our confidence that helped with this win.”

During that 5 point Hawk swing, Faith Hasness had a kill and a Bower ace was helped by 4 Texan’s unforced errors that would get the Hawks back in gear.

Bower has become a different player since the start of this season, “In the beginning I had a reality check….I was not used to Coach Paisley and she had a different style than my previous coaches, but now I totally trust what she says and I take that to my practices and games.”

Two more years of seeing Bower in the Hawk Green will be a joy to watch.

Wimberley did rally back into this battle and forged to a 2 point lead, 21-19, but the rotation would have Faith Hasness serving up another ace with a Regan Mickey block that would send Canyon Lake to Smithville this Thursday where they will meet up with Needville in the second round.

CL had just one service error in that 3rd set and reduced their unforced errors to 9 in finishing this match like they started the night.

To say that Canyon Lake would beat Wimberley in the first round of the Volleyball UIL Tournament 3 or 4 years ago would have had a paddy wagon ready to take you the ‘Funny Farm’.

“The first one (playoff game) is over and now it is time to prepare for Needville,” Coach Paisley finished.

Great game for the Hawks with a sweep which is what the Texans did to your Hawks in those first 6 years of existence. This sweep helped in putting Canyon Lake on the map.
