Canyon Lake has now been immersed with the Basketball Season as football and volleyball teams have been eliminated in tournament play and that immersion can also be seen with some swimming in this week’s schedule.
This has been a part of the season that would usually not hold out for a lot of exciting times around the area but both Girls and Boys Basketball teams have already shown that this might be a good year for giving these athletes a perusal as in previous seasons.
Last year both Varsity teams made the playoffs and it was a first for the boys while the ladies entered the playoff season for the second time in their short history.
Both squads qualified as the last entrant from their district races but this time both teams have a legitimate chance of finishing higher with a chance of drawing a better first game to start in their brackets.
CL’s girls have a 4-4 record going into this week’s action and those four losses coming from larger schools as Coach Zach Burleson continues to work on a rotation with this squad tying to find how these players will perform in different situations.
The Hawk Girls will be off to Lampasas this Tuesday as they will have this game for a measuring stick as the Badgers have a loss to Fredericksburg.
Another aspect for the Girls is seeing how their younger teams compete, this is the first time in a while that there shows promise of some seasoned ladies being able to contribute in the coming years.
Canyon Lake’s Boys are in a similar situation as the Girl’s with one main difference residing with a Senior Class that is starting to come together for a chance of having a good run this go round.
The Hawk Boys Varsity have never had a winning season and qualified last year being 4 games under .500 and now another rung on the ladder for ascension. This deep Senior Class has allowed the Coaching Staff a chance of bringing players off the bench with as much talent when having to go to the bench.
Last week, CL, had a strong contest with Llano and will take on Somerset at the Hawk Nest with the Sub-Varsity tip-off commencing at 5:00 pm on Tuesday.
Those Sub-Varsity teams are also stacked with a lot of talented students as this too will be a fun year for this group that has aspirations of finishing with a solid season.
The Somerset game will also give CL’s Varsity an idea of where they match up with Boerne as the Greyhounds won their game over the Bulldogs.
This will be Tournament Week as CL Ladies will be tipping off in New Braunfels in the Canyon Tournament and the Boy’s have a tournament in Marion this Friday and Saturday.
The Sub-Varsity Boys will have a tournament in Burnet that starts on Thursday and then after a day off will continue their Burnet Tourney on Saturday.
Go Hawks!!
