Canyon Lake Has Good Win over La Vernia, 64-52
Canyon Lake continued their hot streak after waking the La Vernia Bears with 30 made free throws in their win, 64-52.
“La Vernia is a real good team and very aggressive,” Head Coach Zach Burleson stated. “I’m real impressed with them and to come out of this game with a win is awesome.”
Every Hawk got in the scoring book as Reagan Heun led with a double-double, pouring in 16 points from the charity stripe, 21 total and 11 rebounds for a game not ever witnessed by any CL team.
Those 16 made FT shots, by Heun, tied Ashley Pfaff who had a night that matched this feat in a game with Ingram Moore back on January 26, 2010.
How bout 57 total rebounds which is by far the most in Hawk history with 3 Hawk players getting double digits in this category. To go with Heun’s 11 rebounds, Mia Riali had 12 while Freshman Chelsea Tschoepe corralled 13 shots.
“Mia Riali was spectacular,” Coach Burleson continued. “You can see with 12 rebounds but she contested tons of shots and I was really happy with her effort.”
Chelsea’s older sister, Tiffany Tschoepe has the all-time record for Hawk rebounds as the younger sister might have her site on replacing those records before she is finished. Chelsea Tschoepe missed the double digit scoring by one point for her second contest in a row.
Tschoepe led CL with 3 assists, 4 steals, and tied with 1 block to go along with her record rebound night.
“Our freshman played outstanding again and Chelsea played great,” Coach Burleson kept heaping praise. “She had to deal with a lot of pressure tonight and I am very impressed with how we handled that….she has had to really ‘grow’ into her role quick and she is making great progress….she does a little of everything.”
This night had a lot of surprises as Heun left early with foul trouble and CL still had enough offense that kept the Hawks with a lead throughout this contest.
Having over 50 rebounds was one of those very out of nowhere stats that is another variable helping in this win for Canyon Lake.
“We fought hard and contested everything,” Coach Burleson commented more bout those astronomical rebound numbers. “We blocked out well and did a great job of limiting shot attempts.”
Those rebound numbers was upped with 49 shots from the free throw line. The Hawks needed everyone of those made free throws and now will start a 4 game tournament the end of this month in Burnet where CL will face a district foe and 3 other schools that should help this squad.
La Vernia beat Bandera and played Boerne to a 4 point loss earlier this season. Seeing how the Hawks performed without some of their Varsity will continue to show a team that is improving and having a chance for some surprises when district play tip-off’s in January.
Go Hawks and Merry Christmas!!
