Hawks Break Even in Canyon Lake Classic

Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball started 0-2 in the Hawk Classic Tournament and ended 2-0 on Saturday to call it even after a very tiring two days of round ball action.

Young Life says        Go Hawks

The first game had Canyon Lake on the brink of their first win over the Texans, as the Hawks let a 4 point advantage evaporate in the final minute of play for a disappointing finish and loss, 53-50.

Consolation prize was having the closest game with Wimberley will have to suffice as the Hawks await another chance in January to right this ship.

Jacob Ramirez and Rory Preiss led the Hawks with 14 and 13 points respectfully as CL could not get a larger hole enlarged on the rim for their foul shots that would have increased the lead against the Texans.

In the second game with Boerne Champion on Friday, there were more than just fans in the stands watching this show, but Canyon Lake’s players also watched Champion school the Hawks with a 6’9 player that was nothing but head and shoulders above the players. A Hawk would have had altitude sickness flying to get over this towering player.

If not for Jacob Pistokache playing that final minute of the game, the score would have been worse. Pistokache scored 9 points in the final minute with two 3 pointers and an old fashion 3 point play finished at the foul line.

Hancock Mini-Mart Says Go Hawks

Canyon Lake basically had three players in the scoring column as Rory Preiss scored his 9 points the first two quarters and Gerrit Wilkins finished with 8 points in this Champion route.

Boerne Champion was just that as this school finished first in the Canyon Lake Classic Tournament as they would give Somerset their first loss at the Hawk Nest during this two day round-robin.

Randolph played Canyon Lake on Saturday, when the Hawks jumped out to a 10 point first quarter lead that was cut down to a 3 point half-time advantage, 23-20.

“We played Randolph without Heath (McDonough), Charlie (McIntosh), Tyler (Williams), and Jacob Ramirez,” Head Coach Luke Chapman said. “We played pretty well considering we were short handed. We bounced back well from Friday and beat a solid Randolph team.”

The Hawks would increase the score in the 3rd quarter giving CL an 8 point cushion starting the 4th quarter.

  Go Hawks

“We were pretty much in the same situation as the Wimberley game,” Coach Chapman continued. “We closed it out this time, which was really good for our mentality and confidence in games like that.”

This game would become a carbon copy of that Wimberley game played the previous day but on this day, Canyon Lake would respond with win, 50-47.

CL had three players scoring double digit points, Preiss, Parker Mott, and Joseph Boyd all brought their ‘A’ game to the court.

Mott picked a great time to get his first points for this season scoring 12 points all beyond the arc as all hands were on deck and was needed. All the points were important as Boyd responded with 10 and 12 rebounds helping the home team as Boyd had been a silent contributor in recent games.

Boyd finished high point in the last game with Lockhart as this game would remind many people of a mile run with that last lap just fighting for survival and trying to cross the finish line before your competitor.

Case and point was seeing a total of 5 points scored by both schools in the final quarter as both teams finished this race albeit crawling across the finish line.

“The Lockhart game was a drag,” Coach Chapman said with a yawn. “I think both teams were ready to just get out of there and go home. I didn’t even realize how bad the 4th quarter was until I saw it this morning….I knew it was bad, but not that bad.”

Winning games when you are tired is another good aspect that the Hawks can take from this tournament.

“Hopefully we will be rested up after today (Sunday) and ready to finish out the semester this week with two winnable games.”

Canyon Lake will be back in action this Tuesday at the Hawk Nest when Pleasanton comes to town.

This will be the first game you can tune in by listening to CBL (Canyon Lake Broadcasting) as action will aired 30 minutes before game time.

Glad you finished the race Hawks now Go Hawks!!
