Lady Hawks Beat Austin Crockett, 52-37
Canyon Lake took a 5 point first quarter deficit and finish with a 15 point win over Austin Crockett on Tuesday night in Austin, 52-37.
“It was rough at the beginning,” Head Coach Zach Burleson started. “We were frustrated but battled through it. It’s good to come back from adversity. Then again, I need to find a way to get us starting better.”
Those 19 points given up in that first quarter by the Hawks had the defense not allowing that many points combined for the rest of the contest while an impressive 20 point second quarter giving CL enough fire power to build their lead till the end.
“The defense did their job that turned a rough start to a win,” Coach Burleson assessed. “We played good after the first outscoring them, 38-19 in the last 3 periods.”
Reagan Heun finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds. In fact, Heun’s free throw shooting was the worst part of her game as all the other Hawk players had a better shooting percentage than Heun on this night from the line.
“Reagan jump started the scoring hitting on a couple of 3’s from the top of the key,” Burleson continued. “She had a good rythmn and helped us explode to 20 second quarter points, but her rebounding in the second half was just as crucial.”
Freshman Jessie Melendez joined Heun in double digit scoring with 10 points and 8 rebounds having 6 on the offensive side for her impressive night.
“I will also say that Jesse was sensational,” Coach Burleson heaped more praise. “Best game so far. She had big buckets and rebounds and played with the aggressiveness we need from her.”
The Hawks also had the same shooting percentage from beyond the 3 point arc as they did overall helping Canyon Lake showed good signs from both sides of the ball against Crockett.
This win had all the Hawks contributing in some way or other as those ‘little things’ once again added up to enough points and defense for the win.
“They (Crockett) came out hot and it felt like everything they threw up went in,” Coach said. “We contested shots much better and did a good job of limiting then one shot per possession from the 2nd quarter on….Mia (Riali) had a great shooting night too, she shot 3 out of 4 from the line and a big 3 as well.”
This win was helped as CL finished this game with just 16 turnovers helping the Hawks in securing a victory.
“We took care of the ball better after the 1st period and that was key,” Coach Burleson said.
Canyon Lake will be back on the hard wood when they face Florence this Friday with the JV teams tipping off at 5pm. JV 2 will battle with Florence while the JV 1 squad will play New Braunfels Canyon.
The Hawks will be going for their 3rd win in a row as they continue to improve before district starts in January.
Go Hawks!!
