Softball: Hawks Finish 2nd In Hill Country Tourney
Maggie Banks is making deposits as this Softball Season continues.
Canyon Lake’s Softball squad had their 2nd Tournament where they finished 2nd as they lost a coin flip with Navarro to break the first place tie.
A tie is what happened in CL’s game with the Panthers, as that game finished knotted up with both teams finishing the Hill Country Tournament with the same amount of points. Wimberley finished 3rd for this completed round robin affair.
“I thought we played very well,’ Head Coach John Gallagher started. “The Navarro game was tough for us to get anything going but we did capitalize on walks and wild pitches to score….a couple of big hits by their bottom of the order got them back in the game and time ran out.”
Saturday had Canyon Lake back in the saddle with a run-a-way win over Luling, 12-0 and a comeback win over John Paul II after scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning for that final victory.
The Hawks continue to show some power as they have already passed all the doubles hit last season.

Canyon Lake did have some problems in the batter’s box as that game with Navarro had their pitcher with a no-hitter. CL did show patience in waiting out 10 walks but their 3 run lead was matched in the top of that next inning.
Maddy Puente continues her strong showing from the circle with another shut-out as this freshman has not given up a walk in her last two outings.
Another freshman, Marley Carrizales showed off some great defense for the week-end with some great snags that would keep their opponents looking for another batter with one less out, that might be able to get on base.
Senior Kat Weber broke out of a long slump which was another good sign for this line-up.
Canyon Lake has never had a top to bottom, anyone can get a hit anytime, type of team. That has changed so far this season. Double digit hits and a team batting percentage over .400 has helped in forging to a 9 win season and two good finishes in tournament play.

“Overall, I was very pleased with the effort the girls demonstrated and how they played as one,” Coach Gallagher closed. “We had some great defensive plays and timely hitting throughout the tree day tournament….they (the players) had fun and it showed. Now onto games against Burnet and a re-match Friday against Navarro.”
That was another good sign as the Hawk defense has started to settle in and eliminating many of those errors will add to the success as District 28-4A comes calling.
In the past few years, Canyon Lake, has shown the ability to do well with their regular season contests, it will be another thing when district starts as bats will many times fall silent.
Canyon Lake will continue with two good teams on their schedule this week and that Friday game with Navarro will give the Hawks a chance to break that tie.
