Lady Hawk’s Track Team is on the Move

Madison Blackburn starts her track season with 22 points in Bandera

The Lady Hawks Track Team have started to make their move as the team goes into those final meets before District 28-4A comes calling in April.

There will be two more meets and the next one will be in Wimberley and this venue should be close enough for the Hawk Nation to rally behind these students and encourage them during their events.

The Hawks had their best finish at the Bandera Meet before Spring Break and continuing with those type of results will be important during the next few weeks.

Junior Varsity finished first at Bandera and has had some high finishes in each meet this season.

CL’s Lady Tracksters need more students in order to make a bigger splash as you can deduce that many of the athletes scoring points are coming from the lower grade levels.

“So, we finished 3rd overall in Bandera, but I am happy to see the progress that we are making,” Head Coach John Barthels said. “We had a total of 28 girls or races that had their best times of the year at the Bandera meet and we are always talking about peaking at the right time.”

Go Hawks!

That word, ‘peaking’, is important in all the sports but in track it takes on meanings as there is only one athlete that performs for the team and you do not have other teammates that can help in the overall point totals if that event does not pan out.

“We are moving in the right direction and we are able to take a full team with us to Bandera and that is what made the biggest difference,” Coach Barthels continued. “We had been taking about 25 girls total to the first 3 meets and took 42 with us at our last meet.”

That tells you how important depth is for track organization.

“We will be short a few at Wimberley, but we will be at Full strength when we go to Lockhart the week before district to see where everyone stands to do that final tweak to move people around to give us the best chance possible to score points in all of the events when we go back to Fredericksburg.”

A track coach needs to have chess skills in getting points with the athletes they have to work with.

        Go Canyon Lake

Consistency is important and girls like Skylar Hurst is a welcome sight for Coach Barthels as he can bank on getting over 20 points per meet when this young lady is performing.

Hurst has moved up to third place in total points and stands behind two ladies that dominated while at Canyon Lake. Bailey Drum and Marisa Ellis would get points in multiple venues and that will always help in figuring how the team will score.

“We are improving in the record board as we have now broken the mile, sprint relay, 200, and 400 records so far this season.

          Way to Go Lady Hawks

Coach Barthels has a high standard for these ladies which is a good thing as that encouragement can only help as athletes run their races are making those throws or jumps.

“Not only are we trying to bring a district championship to CLHS for the girls, we are trying to set high standards for the future of the program and we have a solid core now that has those goals in mind,” Coach Barthels closed enthusiastically. “They understand what it takes to get better and I consider myself lucky to get to coach where I am and I love every minute I have to work with these athletes.”

Now Coach Barthels needs to get those minutes down below the minute mark so he too can set records.

Go Hawks and good luck as you continue this season.
