Canyon Lake had a solid game in their win over Burnet as the Hawks manufactured 10 runs in the win as they focus on Navarro this coming Friday.

“We executed well early but we let up a bit and they had some big hits,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We got some players in to see how they would do in the field and with some at-bats.”

The Bulldogs were held to 4 hits but 3 of those safeties happen to sail over the outfield wall. There was some power in that line-up and CL was able to keep the bases clean for the most part with good fielding and 11 hits that answered the Bulldogs 4 run 6th inning with a 3 runner in keeping the game in hand.

Carley Dubois had two hits which put her in first place in hits passing Alexis Robinson who finished with 135 hits last season. Dubois now resides with 136 and will have many more games to up that mark.

Lauren Mentzer walked one and struck out 6 Bulldogs as she ran her record to 7-2 after a 53 pitch outing.

CL was able to see two more Hawks in the circle as Freshman Maddy Puente relieved Mentzer but ran into trouble after an error allowing Burnet to stay on the prowl with 2 home-runs for their 4 run 6th inning.

Maggie Banks was next in the circle and her style of pitches had the Bulldogs seeing double with an assortment of pitches that were never solved.

This game gave Banks a save for her second and now tied with Robinson in that category.

“I just threw my pitches,” Banks said calmly. “The Coaches had me throwing my change-up and I was getting them over.”

That was an understatement as this different style of pitching got the Bulldog’s power bats discombobulated.

“Maggie can warm-up much faster and that allows us to use her like we did tonight,” Coach Gallagher said.

On what this game taught this club, Banks stated, “It showed that we won’t give up and if we have errors then we will build each other up.”

               Congrats Hawks!

Canyon Lake has not had a plethora of pitchers in their brief history and this season having 3 pitchers in the same contest was a first in Hawk history.

A lot of players were able to get in the game but lest you forget, CL was a lofty 13-3-1 before their district schedule started last season.

Ten straight losses later, Canyon Lake salvaged their last two contests against the top two teams in district..

Suffice to say, Canyon Lake still has some ways to go in allowing their pre-district record to translate into those district battles.

Navarro and Wimberley will be next up for the Hawks and those two schools will represent the first round of playoffs if CL can figure out the puzzle pieces and put together a great picture this season.

Go Hawks!!
