A Boerne home-run knocked the Hawks into a fight for 2nd place in District 28-4A after a loss to the front runner Greyhounds, 6-5.

Canyon Lake had the lead from the first inning to a one out 7th inning when a bases loaded home run finished the game in grand style for the home team.

Lauren Mentzer had done a masterful game going into that last inning and after fly ball out, there would not be another out recorded.

Boerne had baserunners due to a hit batter and two straight singles before the full-count hit that sailed over the right field fence.

CL had 2 insurance runs in the top of the 7th inning when Mentzer hit a screaming single to the left field gap that scored Carley Dubois and Marley Carrizales. Mentzer’s hit was so hard that she could only make it to first base as the gapper hit the wall hard enough to bounce back for an easy throw back to the infield.

Canyon Lake had just two errors but this game went down the tubes with a walk off,  that will now have the Hawks in a fight with Fredericksburg for that 2nd spot in the playoff hierarchy.

Dubois did what lead off hitters are suppose to do by scoring 4 runs on just one hit on the night. A walk in the first inning was scored when she stole her 93rd career base and then skirted home on an errant throw by the Greyhounds.

For the 3rd inning, Dubois, reached base with a strike out on a wild pitch which she made the jaunt to first base an easy trek.

With two outs, Bailey Bryan’s single scored Dubois for the second Hawk run and a 2-0 lead.

Dubois led off the 5th inning in a more conventional method, a single. The Hawks would have the bases loaded and this time they scored on a sacrifice fly from Mentzer.

If you haven’t realized a pattern, Dubois led off the last inning reaching base on the 4th Greyhound error. CL would score twice when the before mentioned Mentzer laser was hit to the wall.

Canyon Lake’s top of the order produced all the runs and the Greyhound’s pitcher would strike out 12 Hawks in the win.

Now there will not be much rest as the Hawks will take on Hondo tonight at the Hawk Nest and will see what type of effect the devastating loss will have.

Canyon Lake can have 2nd place by winning out and that focus will have to materialize with the quick turn a round game with the Owls.

Go Hawks and kick the Owls out of your Nest!!
