Hawks Break a Ruler in a Game of Inches to the Billies, 6-5
Canyon Lake has the 3rd seed all wrapped up after a loss to Fredericksburg, 6-5 on Tuesday night with just one more game left in the regular season.
If Fredericksburg can beat Boerne on Friday then they will have the 2nd seed all to themselves and the Hawks will need a loss for a coin flip in finding out their destiny when the playoff curtain is raised.
“This game was tough,” Head Coach John Gallagher started. “We played a great game of offense but we were not as patient and it hurt that we could not get our base runners in.”
Canyon Lake left 7 Hawks on base which will not take a rocket scientist to figure out that if a key hit might have had CL securely in 2nd position.
The Billies scored in their 3rd inning and the Hawks responded with a two run single by Adriana Peaslee to take the lead back that next stanza.
Fredericksburg was not finished in this see-saw battle as they scored with 3 runs during their next at bat for a 4-2 lead going into the 5th frame.
That is when the top of the Hawk batting order exacted another two run rally to tie the score, 4-4.
Carley Dubois started this inning with a single and scored on a single by Bailey Bryan two batters later.
In between those happenings, Marley Carrizales had a single and would score on a wild pitch to tie the score. Bryan was left stranded as the Hawks could not cash in more runs.
Freddie would knock out pitcher Lauren Mentzer in the bottom of the 4th inning and Maddy Puente entered into the circle with two Billies on base.
A defensive move after a line shot was coming up the middle and a saving out for the Hawks and Puente’s face ended the inning.
A two out rally in the bottom of the 6th inning scored 2 insurance runs for Fredericksburg when they had a double and two consecutive singles to get just enough runs in for a win.
Canyon Lake started off the final inning with a Puente home-run that had the Fredericksburg maintenance crew on the phone for damage repair for their scoreboard.
There was no doubt where this softball was headed when Puente unloaded on the poor ball. This home-run was the first of its kind since the first tournament of the year when Puente would deposit a homer in a game against Yoakum.
The Hawks did not have any luck with the remainder of the line-up as the next 3 Hawks would have 2 strikeouts and a fly ball out to left field for the game.
Canyon Lake had lost the services of Maggie Banks with an injury earlier in the day and that had the coaches needing to make appropriate changes to fill the 3rd base spot. That injury also played into a decision of who to bring in for help when Mentzer was through.
Banks does not need as much time to warm up and Coach Gallagher will usually go to her with this choice when those later innings come calling.
Another chance in the 4th inning went awry when 5 of the first 6 batters reached base
safely. A 1-2-3 double play would do the Hawks in for a chance of getting more than those 2 runs.
A game of inches would leave CL with a broken ruler in the loss as they now will prepare for Bandera on Friday at the Hawk Nest.
It will be Senior Night and then CL will find out if their next opponent will be Navarro or La Vernia.
