Countdown #6: Lady Hawk’s Soccer 1 Fredericksburg 0
Number 6 for the count down will be a Girl’s Soccer game as the Hawks have continued to put competitive teams on the field since their first kick in 2010.
That 2010 team is still the only girls soccer team with a winning district record as this upstart team finished that year with an 8-5-1 slate and then became one of many teams to make the playoffs that second year of battles.
Danielle Carpenter was the feature offensive weapon for CL that season as this Hawk team was just edged out, 3-2 to Pflugereville Hendrickson.
For the ladies, they have been to the playoffs for 5 years and last year’s team had a first round win.
Another tidbit for the Hawk Nation. Girls Soccer is the only team for Canyon Lake that does not have a losing record against Wimberley.
These two teams presently stand with a 7-7-2 outcomes and CL will need to stop a 4 game losing streak to the Texan’s next year or that would be the first time the Hawks would have trailed in this series.
What happened during this year’s slate of games was a Hawk victory over Fredericksburg in district play and was the first win over the Billies since 2012 and the win was the 2nd in 13 tries.
That win in 2014 was the first game of the season and not a district game, so this year’s victory broke a Billies 5 game winning streak that was all district contests.
CL’s win this season was a shut-out which also happened during that 2014 campaign.
“The win against Fredericksburg in the first round of district was a milestone because it was the first time we had beaten the Billies’ since this district was created back in 2013,” Coach Tierney commented. “This put us in a great position with a tie for a 3rd place finish, which was the Lady Hawks best finish in this district.”
Canyon Lake had a district that showed how good they were when the playoffs started.
“Considering 2 teams from our district went to the regional quarter finals and one went all the way to the state game, I would say being able to defeat Fredericksburg in this tough district sets us up for future success,” Coach Tierney looked into his crystal ball. “The girls want to build off of this win next season.”
On what Coach Tierney thanks about next season, “The Lady Hawks are in a great position to finish even better next year. We have numerous amounts of seniors and quality support coming up from the younger girls. I have high hopes and expectations for the Lady Hawks in 2018.”
Canyon Lake has had a solid class that will be seniors next season.
“Players like Ashley Fouse will help cement our defense. She’s a strong athletic individual who makes big aggressive plays on the back line,” Coach Tierney heaped praise. “Rachel Bennett and Meredith Ellery will be major contributors in the mid-field. They will have 4 years experience at those positions and should supply strong support in the vital center-mid positions.”
“The future is bright for these ladies and this milestone win at Fredericksburg is another building block in the success of the Lady Hawks Soccer Program,” Coach Tierney closed.
Canyon Lake will be poised and ready for more victories over schools like Fredericksburg, now all the Hawk Nation needs to do is wait patiently and Go Hawks!!
