Top Ten Countdown: #2 CL Hawks 3 Wimberley 0

If you would like to know the best team sport in the halls of Canyon Lake then come out and watch some Hawk Volleyball this season starting in August.

During the beginning of Canyon Lake’s school if their would be one team that would deserve to start their year in the dumps it would have to be Volleyball.

Wimberley during those years had been on a 10 year volleyball streak of winning District Championships with several State Championships also on their resume.

Take a vote on which Hawk team might be the last to win a district title then that vote might have been an unanimous vote for the sport of Volleyball having that millstone strapped around their neck.

Two years ago, Canyon Lake had their first District Championship by the…..drum roll……the Hawk Volleyball Team!!!

Wimberley had not only been on a 19 year district championship streak they also possessed a streak of never being beaten in a set or a game within a set against Canyon Lake.

Add one more first and you have a Texan team that would suffer a first round playoff loss for the first time in 20 years.

So, the Hawks this past year moved to another district that did not have Wimberley taking residence, for the first time since the Hawks have been competing in sports. This had the Hawks in a unique position of having a contest against Wimberley in the playoffs.

Alysha Perez and Anna Bettersworth go for block.

The Texans had won more post-season games than the Hawks had won regular games in their history as Wimberley’s volleyball team had been elevated to the upper echelons for so many seasons.

Now you have a team that presently has a 57% winning percentage with a 180-138 record for the past 8 years. Another first is a team with a winning percentage in district games too, with a 45-41 record.

“This was a Fun match….in many ways,” Head Coach Kim Paisley commented. “Even though we beat Wimberley in the regular season, I never turn my back on an opponent and I definitely know not to turn my back on the Texans. We went in with strong minds and hearts. We knew what we had to do and we took care of business.”

Canyon Lake after winning their first round playoff game against Wimberley, now will have a 4 game winning streak over the Texans.

Sophomore Paige Bower led the Hawks with 9 kills in this contest as the Hawks spread their offense around not giving the Texans any one player to concentrate on for blocks and defense.

Canyon Lake ran away in the first game with a 25-19 victory and then Wimberley would make the next two games of the set a little more competitive as Canyon Lake would not succumb to their rival opponent by outlasting the Texans, 25-21 and 25-22.

This would be the first time in 20 years that Wimberley would be on the short end of the stick during the first round of playoffs.

Canyon Lake has come a long way from those first seasons to having a historic victory over Wimberley and leaving the Johnson City Gymnasium as the victor.

Wow….a change of guard for the ages!!
