CL Hawk Freshman Sweep Poth Pirates off Plank, 25-23 & 25-12
Canyon Lake Freshman Volleyball swept the Poth Freshman off the Plank in a Tuesday night contest winning, 25-23 and 25-12.
“We were consistent,” Head JV Coach Tosha Ridgeway commented on how the team took control in that second game. “We finished this game and that is what we were wanting to learn today…to finish.
On seeing so many players that contributed, “We want to see what we can do with different combinations but we are still working on different positions.”
That first game was tied at 13 all when the Pirates responded to a Hawk 19-14 lead that had the home team holding on as the Pirates closed the gap during a late flourish with an ending 2 point win.
A Poth rally closed the Hawk advantage to one point, 15-14 when Kaylee Moore took the serve and scored an ace after a Hannah Cortez kill that ballooned the CL lead to that 5 point lead.
Kylie Morgan was next up with a 3 point rally and kept the Hawk lead at a 23-18 advantage.
Morgan would score an ace and the Hawks got another kill from Cortez with what would be a safe lead.
That was the thinking until a Poth rally with the Pirates closing the Hawk lead to 23-21 nail biter.
With a CL one point lead, 24-23, the Pirates suffered an unforced error for the Canyon Lake first game win.
That next contest had the Hawk Freshman taking control early and this game and they would not have any Pirates to threaten them, as the plank was shortened, and Poth found it hard playing volleyball while trying to swim after falling off their own plank.
Several Hawks had some good rallies to put this second game away fast as Madelynn Row served with a 4 point rally, then Madeleine Verette had a 3 point rally with both getting a kill from Tilly Wetz.
Poth would make a final push getting the score back to within 5 points, 17-12 before a Moore 7 point final rally giving the fans plenty of time to make their way to the main gym for the battle with the Varsity teams.
That final rally had 3 aces by Moore with two kills from Kaitlyn Cox with another kill from Row that helped finalize this two game match, 25-12.
We did good and we are coming together, we worked on staying positive,” Moore said more succinctly when asked the difference in the two games on this night. “We had to talk and pick it up and stay focused and play the ball on the court.”
The Hawk Freshman certainly did that well as they blitzed the Pirates for the sweep.
CL Hawks will be back in action this coming Friday when the Blanco Panthers enter the Hawk Nest.
Go Hawks and Welcome to High School!!
