Canyon Lake started their second day in Wimberley’s Tex-Fest Tournament by turning the table and having their best game starting off in their battle with Johnson City Eagles.

CL would finish their 2nd day with a 2-1 record and with their best finish ever in the Tex-Fest tournament.

On how important Faith Hasness was this week, “We want her to hit the ball more and we had to run a 5-1 offense,” Head Coach Kim Paisley stated. “She (Hasness) can run our offense and she can have a solid season as we start looking for her to score points.”

“This was a confidence booster,” Coach Paisley said in response to how the team played in the Tex-Fest tournament. “This helped our Juniors and Sophomores to start stepping up as we start to rise above our expectations.”

Canyon Lake started with a 2 game sweep of Johnson City.

The Hawks opened up a 13-4 lead and then piled it on with 9 straight points that finished off the Eagles, 25-7.

Amber Voigt was the server for that game ending rally as she finished the set with 4 aces.

In that second contest, Johnson City was more aggressive and eliminated their unforced errors as they had the exact same score in their favour starting this battle with a 13-7 lead.

Canyon Lake did not go away and outscored the Eagles, 14-7, to forge to their first lead, 21-20 before sweeping the best-of-three affair.

Anna Betterworth throwing a Block Party

Anna Bettersworth was one Hawk that was instrumental with kills and blocks as CL had control of the net throughout this set.

Canyon Lake suffered their first loss in the Tex-Fest tourney as United Laredo upended the 4 game winning streak as this 6A school would win the Tex-Fest Championship after disposing a scrappy Blanco club.

The Hawks would be pitted against Wimberley for a chance to finish in 3rd place for this two-day event.

Canyon Lake came into the game with a 4 game winning streak against the Texans as Wimberley has 6 State Championship Banners adorning their walls and with that dominance had won the first 12 games played against their Devil’s Back-Bone Neighbours.

This contest would go the distance as the Texans took the first game 29-27 which had both teams with chances in chalking up a win.

The game was a back and forth battle.

Wimberley had an 8-4 lead and then CL would lead 16-12….back to the Texan’s who took a 20-17 advantage.

Mima’s says good game Hawks!!

The Hawks had two chances to end the game but could not get that point as Wimberley would will this win with the final two point rally.

CL responded with a 25-14 victory as the Hawks largest lead was that final score. CL had to battle back in that first game to force the overtime but Head Coach Kim Paisley changed up the rotation which would have Senior Faith Hasness leading off as the Hawk server.

That move paid dividends in the second game rout as Hasness jumpstarted the Hawks to a 4 point lead that ballooned to a 9 point lead before a Texan’s 4 point rally to draw back to a 4 point game, 15-11 Hawks.

Hasness was next up on the rotation for serving and once again negated the Wimberley 4 points having Canyon Lake coasting to the 11 point win. Hasness would finish with 6 aces showing the importance this move turned out to be for Canyon Lake.

CL Hawks!!

For the third game, Wimberley would jump out to a 3 point lead, 7-4 before Lainee Moses’ 2 serve rally. The Texan’s would keep the pressure on getting those two points back and an 11-8 lead.

Wimberley continued with a 3 point cushion, 15-12, when Hanna White cut into the Texan’s lead with a 3 point rally that would give CL their first lead since a Hawk 2-1 advantage to start this third winner take all game.

Bettersworth was huge during this part of the game with a block and kill combined with Alysha Perez’s 2 kills.

“Getting a block that goes to a straight kill gets everyone excited and happy,” Bettersworth said after finishing her day with 7 blocks. “Especially the back row!”

On how the team has done this first week, “If we lose then we would have been down a little….but I think we are doing well but we still have room for improvement.”

Riley Mickey is all smiles after beating Wimberley

It would be a back and forth score when Perez took the ball for her second chance in serving, as the Hawks, still needed to climb a hill being behind, 19-20. Canyon Lake would score 6 straight times on Perez’s serves with an ace and two kills from Riley Mickey.

Mickey finished with 8 kills in the match as the Junior had her best game of the season while down on the front row.

“This brings confidence and we don’t take Wimberley lightly,” Mickey said. “This game means a little more and we always want to beat them.”

On how this game will help as the season continues, “Our entire team can build on this type of game and I had some good setting from Faith (Hasness) and with the game atmosphere, then everything was there.”

Sophomore, Cassidy Felps contributed with her serve and setting on this day that had several Hawks starting to find their way on the floor as the first week finished with Canyon Lake sporting a 5-3 record.

Next up will have the Hawks welcoming Lockhart on Tuesday before Canyon Lake goes to the Sinton Tourney next week-end.
