CL Hawks Start Season Blancing Blanco, 38-0
It took 10 years for Canyon Lake to shut out Blanco as the Hawks started their season blanking Blanco, 38-0.
“This was a total team effort,” Head Coach Charlie Drum stated. “Having our back-ups in the game and still not allowing a touchdown shows that everyone was giving their best effort.”
The Defense was shut-down ready from start to finish as the Panthers were able to amass just 7 first downs with out the help of a flag, ending with 9 for the game.
Another good sign for the Hawk defense was getting 3 take aways with an interception by Trenton Lorett at the end zone ending one Blanco threat and recovering two fumbles.
Adding more fuel the the fire had CL forcing 5 punts in what proved to be another good start to the year and now with a two year winning streak over Blanco and evening the season series with 5 wins a piece.
The 2nd Half was not as dominant and Coach Drum addressed that, “We have to come out of our halftime and not let down, we have a veteran ball club and we have to expect a better effort overtime now.”
This was CL’s 100th game and that first game with the Panthers had Canyon Lake looking up at a 63-0 loss on a year that had just one win.
The ground Hawks started the game with a 76 yard drive capped off with a Caimen McDonough touchdown pass for 28 yards from QB Ben Fulton starting his Senior year with another impressive game.
McDonough would score again to end the first half with another wide open catch for 34 yards that had the Hawks enjoying a 24 point lead going into their locker room strategy half time talks.
Trenton Lorett was perfect with his kicking chores as he was through the uprights on a 29 yard field goal to go along with his consistent extra points.
Add an interception to stop a drive and you have the makings for a well played first game to his season.
But that INT was crucial since Lorett was responsible for the Panthers having the ball deep in the Hawks side of the field after miss timing his jump and allowing the longest play in the game for Blanco in the 3rd quarter with a catch and run covering 52 yards to the Hawk’s 19 yard line.
The Defense responded in shutting down the Panther’s next 2 runs for no gain and then the Lorett INT stopping the bleeding which helped keep the score with a 31 point CL lead and feeling good going into that final quarter.
“The Defensive Line pressing their Quarterback was the key for my interception,” Lorett recalled. “They tried to do a sneak play and I just waited for the ball….it was pretty cool to have a chance to intercept the ball after a bad play.”
On what the word Finish meant on his shirt, Lorett said, “Since pre-season and 2 a days we have wanted to finish in everything we do and finishing in everyday.”
A new Defensive Coordinator in Brian Hooper had some words on how this game transpired, “We played well the whole game and our game plan was to make them (Blanco) do something else than what they wanted and we have preached take-a-ways.”
That certainly was evident as CL took care of business, “We had a lot of kids get in and they played well,” Coach Hooper continued. “I am proud of the kids and how they played on the field.”
Tanner Faris finished the night with 143 yards that solidified this young man as he is still trailing only Zach Henshaw after passing Josh DeVries on this night.
“They were more physical and they got better,” Faris said without any hesitation. “But so did we….our offensive line are always awesome and they are great and they (Blanco) got tired and that is what helped me make the edge and the offensive line just smashed them.”
Top 5 All-Time Rushers name carries yards average Zach Henshaw 724 4364 6.0 Tanner Faris 254 2224 8.8 Josh DeVries 297 2108 7.1 Hayden Dubois 435 1973 4.5 Eduardo Covarrubias 295 1711 5.8
All of the Hawk scores but one covered 28 yards or more which was a good sign considering CL lost 2 players from last year that were adept in scoring from a long way out in Austin Brennan and Brandon Courtney.
Canyon Lake applied the pressure and finished what they started against a team that at one time was controlling this series.
Taking care of the ball and having a line that controlled the game on both sides of the ball was the key for what will a jettison as this edition of Hawk Football will try to continue this week’s game against a 5A foe in Austin Reagan next week in Austin.
Greyson Lee commented on seeing his brother who had a decent career as a Hawk, “He (Haden Lee) likes to see how far we have come and he gives me tips and is my personal coach.”
“We have prepared for on how they (Blanco) would put up a good fight and we started keying on their players and we had studied their players and had watched them on film and were familiar with them….Lee said as he was…with it.”
One down and 9 more to Go Hawks!!
