CLJV Hawks Control Badgers in Breakaway Win, 34-7
Canyon Lake’s JV squad had a statement game after a loss to Wimberley last week beating Lampasas on Thursday night at the Hawk Nest, 34-7.
“We had guys coming up and striking people all night,” Coach John Barthels said. “That was one of the best games I have seen them play and I think with them going against the Varsity in practices has made them better.”
Running Back Connor Rose put an exclamation point on Coach Barthels comments by rushing for a new JV record finishing with 223 yards for 15 yards per tote.

The Hawks started this game with a lost fumble and allowing the Badgers to start on CL’s 36 yard line.
This Canyon Lake defense was as hot as what the offense would eventually reach by allowing 5 total yards on Lampasas’ first time with the ball.
The big hit was administered by Devon Cordell after he pushed the Badgers back with a 7 yard loss having Lampasas to punt.
Canyon Lake was not in sync on their next possession after being able to amass just 7 yards and punting the ball.
That was when this game would change course quickly as Lampasas fumbled on the return giving the Hawks another chance starting on their 27 yard line.
This 10 play drive would showcase 5 different Hawk runners with Roberto Vargas having a 33 yard rush being untouched through the line run putting CL on the Badger’s 22 yard line.
It would take 6 more plays when QB Brandon Robinson would become a magician for his 4 yard touchdown run for the first Hawk score, 8-0.
Robinson was surrounded after a faking a handoff and being 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Then a burst of speed to the outside would open the run up for the score. A play like that has been seen before with the QB usually taking a big loss, but Robinson would not have that usual result being a thought on this play.
Lampasas was made a one dimensional team as Canyon Lake’s rushing defense would have the Badgers with negative ground yardage going into halftime.
But, before the halftime festivities, Canyon Lake would increase their lead, 14-0, after an 11 play drive covering 69 yards and seeing Rose score the first of 3 touchdowns from 12 yards out.
That 12 yard run would not even reach Rose’s average for the night but sometimes the goal line is not a friend for stat gobbling runners.
Lampasas came out of their halftime break with an eye opening drive to cut the lead to one score, 14-7. This 64 yard drive would be the only sunlight the rainy night would witness for the visitors as it would be the only score for the Badgers.
It would not take long for CL to answer that wake-up call, when Rose would make the corner and 67 yards later seeing a, 22-7 lead.
Rose rushed for 132 yards in that 2nd half as he would uncork another touchdown run, this time from 46 yards for his next touchdown.
The game was now in the Hawks control. Robinson was not finished as his 42 yard run on that same drive helped set Rose’s jet sweep for running into daylight on a dark rainy night.
Andrew Kullberg would realize the last Hawk score in the 4th quarter from 4 yards out as he bulled through the line. This drive was helped when Matthew Rivera had a highlight run for 25 yards with all of CL’s guns firing with plenty of ammunition.
The Hawk Defense was stout the whole night as several players made the going tough for the Badgers. Defensive End Tyler Siegman and Linebacker Nathan DeLeon were two of those players that administered some pain as both players spent many of Lampasas offensive plays in their backfield.
A Wimberley loss the week before helped in getting a different result on this night as the Badgers had beaten Wimberley’s JV earlier this season.
“I was scared bout this game knowing that Wimberley had lost to them,” Coach Barthels stated.
If there were playoffs in JV football, this team might like a redo with the Texans but that salvo will have to wait until this team gets to varsity next season.
Way to Go Hawks!!
