CL Hawk’s Team Effort was Enough for Big Win over Billies, 53-35
**YouTube Interviews below Box Score, with CJ Parrish, Trenton Lorett, and Greyson Lee.
Canyon Lake cleared their 2nd hurdle on a road for their first district championship after an entertaining, 53-35 win.
“Fredericksburg is much better this year and with our team effort we were able to step up as this is all about ‘Team’,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “We had guys ready to play when we had some starters go down and that has been what we have been doing all year…..Experience was the key, as we have had a lot of players starting and that is especially true this season.”
“This game was all about, Team,” Coach Drum surmised.
Fredericksburg fired the first shot in this contest when they were successful with an onside kick to start the game. CL’s defense was spot on with a stop on a 4th down try with the Billies first possession, as these Hawk’s would dodge a bullet.
Canyon Lake would make the Billies pay, driving 51 yards as Tanner Faris scored from 3 yards out for the Hawk’s first lead. This drive was highlighted when J.T. Greene caught a pass and run from QB Ben Fulton for 38 yards putting CL on FHS 10 yard line.
Fredericksburg’s next drive would be thru the airways as QB Will Flannery found leading Billie receiver Sean Majors from 29 yards out. FHS would have just one rushing play on this drive as the Billies continued to use their balance this season by land or air.
CL held the Billies, to 100 yards under their season average, which has been a major part of the Hawks success this year.
The Billies would force a Hawk punt on their next time with the ball and FHS would take their first lead when Jarrett Beard was open for a jump ball in the end zone putting Fredericksburg up, 14-7.
A vintage Hawk drive was needed and CL was methodical with a 13 play drive going 75 yards when Faris scored on a 6 yard run around the end. Faris would lead Canyon Lake with 110 yards on the night as he had 50 of those yards on this drive.
It would not take the Billies long to get their lead back when William Sebera capped this drive with a 71 yard run that had Beard putting the finishing touches, scoring from the 5 yard line. FHS would surprise CL when they ran a 2 point conversion, that increased their lead, 22-14.
This was certainly a back and forth battle as the Hawks would score again on a 10 play 61 yard drive with Tristan Chacon getting into the scoring act with his first of four scores on the night, that would get CL within one, 29-28.
A Hawk Defensive stop would give Canyon Lake enough time for an important score, having 2 minutes before half. The Lake, traveled 59 yards, with 3 explosive plays that allowed the Hawk’s to lead for the rest of this contest, 29-22.
The drive had Faris catching a pass for 27 yards and then Fulton would find Chacon with some dancing moves on his catch and run from 15 yards out giving the Hawks their first lead since the first touchdown.
Chacon now has, 836 all purpose yards, while reaching the end-zone 15 times this season and that leads the team.
“It was a little different running behind Devin Cordell and CJ Parrish,” Chacon said after being asked on how well the offensive line blocked for him and having some new faces on that line. “They did a good job tonight.”
A nifty fake extra point had Fulton throwing to Trenton Lorett to help CL with a 7 point lead, 29-22 going into half.
To start the 2nd half, Greyson Lee would shoot the gap for a Billie 7 yard loss deep in Fred’s territory which had Fredericksburg with a punt to start the 2nd stanza. The FHS punter was standing in his end-zone for the punt. Their snap would be low, causing the punter to kneel down to retrieve the ball and with that mistake, Canyon Lake would get their 2nd Safety in CL history and a Hawk lead, 31-22. That first safety was back during the 2009 campaign.
Fredericksburg would tighten the game with another Majors’ reception with still over 8 minutes remaining the 3rd quarter.
From here Canyon Lake would take the momentum starting with a 50 yard run up the middle, as Jacob Ruff, was able to get back in action and made his presence known on his first carry, 38-29 Hawks.
“It was great to get back in it,” Running Back Ruff stated after being asked what it was like to get playing time after spending some games mending injuries. “It has been touch and go this year.”
Ruff was in to spell Micah St. John for some rest and Ruff would spell touchdown on his first run into the line.
“We (St. John) feed off of each other,” Ruff commented on how St. John might have been upset he did not have that same play. “When their defense goes outside then the middle will open up.”
Which was the situation on this night as the 2nd half would have a much easier time for those up the middle running plays as the Billies can get run-down after 65 running plays.
The next Freddie drive had Lorett with an interception after QB Hobbs Price was pressured by a blitzing Hawk defensive line causing the errant throw.
Another CL score that would take the Hawks into the 4th quarter and that would have a Hawk, 46-29 lead after a Chacon 2 yard run.
Canyon Lake would not relinquish the ball on the final drive and the Hawks would go 79 yards while draining 7 minutes of clock and win, 53-35 final score.
CL has now cleared two major hurdles on their quest for a District 14-4A Championship. With a bye week, Canyon Lake will set their sights on a Duck hurdle to see if this might be the year to shut their quack.
“Time is everything right now,” Chacon said after being asked about the bye week. “We will now take the next 14 days and concentrate for our next game because this will be our most important game in our life.”
If the Team stays together then that possibility of taking care of time on the clock for a win, will become a reality.
Go Hawks!!
