Canyon Lake will be the first seed for their Bi-District game with Gatesville this week as the Hawks will go into this affair after winning the District 14-4A Crown.
The Hawks are presently on a 2 game losing streak for their first round of playoff games, while sporting a 6 game regular season winning streak. Gatesville is presently on a 3 game losing streak to end their season.
District 13-4A is one, if not the toughest, district in the state of Texas in 4A competition. The top 3 teams have been ranked in the State Poll this year.
Hence a 3 game losing skid for the Hornets.
The two teams do have a common opponent in Lampasas, where Gatesville won convincingly, 49-13 while CL had to work for their win, 35-21.
QB Jett Truss takes the snaps and can have an accurate arm as his 353 yards passing against Liberty Hill will vouch for.
Truss can scamper out of trouble and that will keep a play active. Might remind Hawk fans of Brook Klutts, the QB for Boerne.
Most of those completions, for Truss in that game, had Derrick Bayer at the receiving end. Bayer finished with 271 yards in that one offensive contest.
T.J. Miller will be the feature back for the Hornets.
Gatesville reminds The ReSporter of Wimberley in that you have to do a lot of searching for stats. The Texans like to keep people guessing as they too, are not very accommodating for the press to find information.
CL might have an edge but that can only be deduced by looking at the Hornets last game with LH Panthers. That contest was won by the Panthers, 49-42.
LH rushed for 570 yards, but still needed every score to win by 7 points.
Canyon Lake will be adding Tanner Faris into the backfield as the Hawks might be at full strength offensively.
Where this contest will be decided has to reside on the defensive side. CL had a good game holding Taylor to 14 points and keeping the Ducks from the end-zone in that first half. Having a similar work ethic will need to be on display this week as the Hawks will need to stay away from the Hornet’s sting.
It takes all three phases and to start peaking at this time of the season is a good place to be team wise. With a decent showing on defense, the Hawks will give themselves a chance for going another round in the playoffs.
Go Hawks!!
