Heun Signs with Division I Team

Amidst fans wearing gold and green NDSU T-shirts, Reagan Heun signed on the dotted line, today, committing to playing basketball for North Dakota State University on a full ride. She is the first recipient of a Division I scholarship for Canyon Lake High School.

“All my friends have been very supportive,” Heun said. “They have all been really excited for me.”

Her relationship with NDSU began when she sent them film of her playing and they emailed back that they were interested in talking with her. It was a school that she pursued because they are competitive in the their conference, which is a strong conference, she said.

“Fargo is just the coolest place,” Heun said. “I loved it up there. I fit in their program really well and I will get the opportunity to play, which is huge.”

Heun said she is looking forward to summer school, which starts in June, because she will get to start practicing with the Bison team. She leaves only one week after she graduates form CLHS.

“I’m really looking forward to getting close with the team,” Heun said. “On the visit they were really awesome.”

The team will be carrying 13 players next year of which only one is a senior, Heun said. The teams can carry up to 15 and she said there is a possibility that they will try to add one more player to her recruiting class.

“As of now, I am a recruiting class of one,” Heun said.

She said she is undecided on a major right now, but she is considering business.

“Their business program is accredited,” she said, “and if I do business, I will try to get it done in three years and work on my masters the fourth year.”

As long as she is playing, her education is covered by the scholarship, which includes master’s work if done in the four years of her scholarship.

The Lady Hawks have already begun their season and beat Lehman, a team Heun said was a tough team.

“We have the chance to come up from behind and surprise some people this year,” she said of the CLHS team. “We are really looking forward to this season.”

She said she knows the season will go by fast and before she knows it, it will be March. From there it is only two more months before she is off to North Dakota to begin the next phase of her basketball career.
