CL Hawks Boys finish 2-2 at Hawk Classic Tourney
Canyon Lake started their Tournament with a 61-41 win over Ingram on Friday afternoon. The weather delayed the start times and CL was also frigid starting the contest, but a huge day on the board helped jettison the Hawks.
CL’s leading scorer, Parker Mott did not finish the game but The Lake was still able to get over 60 points which was an important item to help pull this year’s club one game off of a .500 record, 5-6.
Canyon Lake outscored the Indians, 24-2 on second chance points which would be the reason for how this game was a 20 point difference. Ingram could only total 15 boards and one of those coming from their offensive side.
CL’s guard play dominated the game with Sophomore Zach Griffin breaking out in this contest with 18 points and Zack Taliaferro scoring 14 points to break out of a mini-scoring slump this season.
Consistency will be the key to how well Canyon Lake can make strides toward district play that begins in January. There are many puzzle pieces for Coach Lucas Chapman to look for as the Hawks work on different looks as players work together with communications and knowing each others skill set.
The Hawk Classic Tournament had several good teams and finishing 2-2 is a step in the right direction.
“This was good to play four games,” Head Coach Chapman assessed. “With all the new faces it was important for us to get repetitions and we will need to utilize our size and we just haven’t done a lot with our size and we will have to get more comfortable.”
Canyon Lake saw how their size might size up with 4A schools as the Boerne Champion team played with several players with a height advantage.
“We came into this game (Boerne Champion) scared and intimidated,” Jarred Rollins deduced. “We came out with a different mind set and our play as a whole was better but we started this game with a lack of effort.”
Rollins was commenting on how CL started this Champion game behind the 8-Ball but in the second half outscored the team starting with a 25 point 3rd quarter.
“If we come out and play hard and aggressive the the sky’s the limit,” Rollins closed.
Zack Taliaferro started scoring more points as the guards upped their scoring game throughout the Tourney.
“Coach drew up a good game plan so we could get out and find our teammates in the open lanes,” Taliaferro said. “We are better right now than how we started the season.”
With some more games, the late arrivals will start to get into basketball shape. Taliaferro mentioned Michale Harwell on how his game will help in the paint.
“He (Harwell) is a big body and when he can catch the ball then he will get the rebound.”
Canyon Lake had two players, Zack Griffin and Jarred Rollins who finished on the All-Tournament Team.
Griffin is coming along as his outside shot will help bring opposing defenses out to defend opening lanes to the basket.
“I was pretty nervous,” Griffin commented when talking about what it was like to be on the Varsity as a Sophomore. “The team was making fun of me when I started the season and I was traveling a lot and was called for walking several times….but Coach just told me that I had to shoot more and now I am getting more comfortable.”
Griffin is the 3rd leading scorer during the first 14 games and this will be a good player to watch for as the season start matures.
Canyon Lake will be on the road tomorrow as the Hawks travel to Pleasanton as the season continues to the ultimate goal of being a team that is in concert when games start for real in January.
Go Hawks!!
