Canyon Lake lost the turnover/free throw battle in loss to La Vernia, 69-56 for their last contest before a Christmas Break.
Committing 21 turnovers compared to the Bears 8 turned out to be one of the elements leading to this 13 point loss while converting 53% of those free throws finished off any chance of a Hawk comeback.
“As always we did really good things, but we are not consistent with those things over the course of 32 minutes,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We turned it over too many times and we couldn’t get stops when we needed to.”
CL was down just 5 points going into their halftime break as LV scored 15 points off of the Hawks miscues while Canyon Lake converted 8 points on the Bear’s turnovers.
With 3 players (Parker Mott, Tae Gray, and Michael Harwell) finishing with double digit scoring, Canyon Lake could not add up those little things that help teams win which caused the damage on this night.
Harwell and Caimen McDonough are starting to get into the flow of the game easier as each game is played.
“Our big guys played really well, and were a bright spot,” Coach Chapman continued. “Caimen and Michael are starting to get more comfortable and have knocked the rust off, after coming from football.”
The Hawks also lost 3 players to foul trouble adding up all those little bad things that will hamper a team searching for a victory.
Canyon Lake has now lost 6 of their last 7 games going into the break before meeting a host of tough teams in the Fredericksburg Tournament at the end of this year.
“We just have to continue to work and grind each day and continue to believe and trust each other,” Coach Chapman said in response to how the upcoming games will be against some tough schools.
“It’s easy to place blame on others when we are struggling, and we have to guard against that and come together even more. We have the ability and bodies in that locker room to get it done, we just have to continue to work.”
There were some good things that came out of this contest with 14 assists from various players and securing 36 rebounds was a good sign for future battles.
CL will be back in action December 27th when they travel to Fredericksburg and meet up with Burnet and Hidalgo and try to right their ship as District 28-4A looms in January. The Billies Tourney will feature 4 games in two days.
