Hawks Snap 1 Game Losing Streak with 2 Wins in Comfort Tourney

Canyon Lake passed the 19 wins barrier on their first day of games at the Comfort Tournament on Friday after wins over Pearsall and Neuces Canyon, 42-37 and 63-45.

Reagan Heun has 35 points in two wins at the Comfort Tournament

The short handed Hawks were without Skylar Hurst and Alexa Ramos in that first win as the wins keep coming for Canyon Lake.

Reagan Heun had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in her game with Pearsall as the Hawks kept their game at arms length throughout the contest.

Canyon Lake hit an all-time record of 11 blocks in their win as Caroline Kullberg finished with 6 rejections and missed by just one block in tying Amber Ramsey’s 7 blocks in her game against Mason back on December 12th during the 2013-14 season.

This was the 18th game where the Hawk’s opponents failed to reach 40 points as CL’s defense continues to keep an edge after the Christmas break. There was a plethora of turnovers by Canyon Lake after finishing with 27 in the win and those numbers will need to be reduced, but in the first contest after a long lay-off might have been expected.

Canyon Lake now has 20 wins with a chance of improving that total as District play is still 4 or 5 games away.

              Go Lady Hawks!!

“I’m happy with it,” Coach Zach Burleson said in commenting on getting to the 20 win plateau. “This is important thing for the girls….we have been in every single game and tonight we were able to get steals which led to easy points.”

On how many assists the Hawks had in the 2nd game, “We have been working on the zone (defense) and we got a lot of good looks.”

In the Hawk’s second game, Caroline Kullberg had her best night scoring when she reached 19 points, as most of those scores, came from some nifty assists. Kullberg continued her blocking escapade as she finished with 4 in this win giving her a combined 10 for the two contests.

Congrats Lady Hawks on 20th Win

Canyon Lake outscored Nueces Canyon 29-18 in the 2nd half and that put this game out of reach early, as CL will now face Comfort on Saturday for their next contest starting at 1pm. This victory pushed the Hawks win total to 20, giving this year’s team the most wins in a year, passing that 2010 team.

The Hawks shot lights out in the night game, as the offense finished shooting 59% from the field and 79% from the charity stripe. It was the best beyond the arc shooting in the history of Lady Hawk Basketball as the Ladies shot 62%, making 8 out of 13 shots.

Huen joined Kullberg in double digit scoring with 17 as Huen was 3 for 4 from beyond the arc. She also dished out 7 assists, 6 steals, and had 4 blocks for the night. A pretty good all-round game for this Senior as every player contributed.

“We were focused on moving the ball and getting quality shots,” Heun said. “With this being the second game after a 7 day break and missing two players we were just getting the rust off.”

Heun was commenting on the difference between the early game and the win over Nueces Canyon.

            Let’s Go Lady Hawks!!

“It wasn’t that long since we could have played our best game and still lost by 10 points,” Huen looked back on previous years. “But playing so-so and we still can get away with a win this year.”

Canyon Lake is playing short handed and Coach Burleson was very intentional in his substitutions as resting players is a must when the bench is so shallow.

Now CL will start their Saturday with a game with the Host School (Comfort) and then continue the tournament with one more game. That next contest will either be for the Championship or 3rd place as the short handed Hawks will be glad that they have wings, as short-hands don’t matter.

Go Hawks!!
