Fireworks produced a dud in a game pitting two top 25 teams on Tuesday night at the Hawk Nest as Canyon Lake fell, 38-31.

A total of 12 points between the two schools in the first period had a lot of defense and a lot of turnovers in a sloppy game where the nerves even had a turnover in this loss.

              Go Lady Hawks!

“Their pressure forced us into mistakes,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said matter of factly. “But that was what we needed and our girls were put in situations they had not seen this year.”

No Hawk was able to find the rim as CL finished with a 26% shooting night no mater how where the ball was shot.

From inside the arc, 30%…..from beyond the arc, 17%….and from the free throw line, 28%, that showed how hard this game was to watch.

Even as the first half horn went off, Canyon Lake was still in this contest trailing by one point, 19-18.

With 2-minutes left in the game, the Hawks were still in the fight trailing by two points, 33-31.

The wheels finally fell off in those final two minutes as the Panthers finished scoring, where most of their points were made,….from the charity stripe.

Canyon Lake led in the game once, as CL’s Alexa Ramos stole the ball and made a rare lay-up (on this night) and the Hawks would lead, 20-19 for 10 seconds.

Navarro would increase their lead to 9 points with 3:38 left on the 4th quarter clock but Canyon Lake would not give up, as they got back within 2 points or a one possession contest.

                  Go Lady Hawks!!

With two turnovers on possessions that had CL with a chance of tying or taking the lead, the fire was finally extinguished and only the 4th loss of the season would be in the books.

A bounce here or there could have changed the outcome, but on this night, those plays belonged to the Panthers.

Canyon Lake will strap their shoes on for the Comfort Tournament at the end of the month for their next contest and a chance to get back on the winning track.

That will put Canyon Lake closer to New Year’s Eve and a chance to get those Fireworks working again.

Go Hawks!!
