CL Hawks & Zac Griffin’s Last Second Shot Beats Texans, 48-46

Canyon Lake has a two game winning streak over Wimberley after winning their final non-district game over the Texan’s, 48-46.

A huge game for the Hawks as similar contests in the past would have marked the end of this game with a loss on the ledger. CL will now have a 3 game winning streak going into District 28-4A play this Friday in Hondo.
“We made a lot of mistakes,” Head Coach Lukas Chapman commented. “When we play with energy and passion, it helps us overcome some short comings…..We control what we can control and we were resilient and it took our mental toughness.”
This was a barometer game for your Hawks as Wimberley has victories over Bandera and Fredericksburg who both reside in the Hawks district. Another item to note was a loss to Boerne last week that was close enough to know this CL team might not be too far away from pulling off more victories in the coming weeks.
Caimen McDonough was the go to player to start this contest as Parker Mott found him open for a 3 point play the old fashion way his shot and a free throw.

McDonough was a recipient of another assist from Zack Taliaferro that tied the score at 5 points a piece. Wimberley took a 4 point lead back during the next minute of play and that was when Canyon Lake took control, by outscoring the Texan’s 10-2 to end the quarter.
That run was capped off when Zac Griffin had nothing but net on a 3 point shot after a pass from Michael Harwell as time expired and a 4 point lead.
During the second period, CL and Wimberley’s score would vacillate between 5 point Hawk lead, 21-16 at the 6:40 mark to a Texan lead, 22-21 with 1:45 remaining in the quarter. Tae Gray would have the honors of scoring two free throws to end this period during last seconds before half.
Canyon Lake took a hard fought 28-24 lead to their locker room.
Way to go Hawks & beat Hondo
Another back and forth 3rd quarter but CL would get more separation when they extended their lead to 9 points after another McDonough put back, 34-25.
That momentum was slowed drastically when Griffin drained another 3 pointer that was nullified when Tae Gray was called for a charging foul. If that shot would have counted then a 12 point Hawk lead might have snow balled for a larger end result.
Wimberley took that chance with a make and from their pulled back for a 5 point advantage, 38-33 game.
With 5 minutes left, a Griffin free throw had a CL lead of 8 points but this game would be whittled down as the Texan’s were relentless as the Hawks opened the door by missing front ends of one and one charity stripe chances.
A steal and lay-up by Taliaferro with 2 minutes remaining put CL up 4 points, 46-42. A 3-pointer by a Texan at the 1:13 mark brought this ‘battle of the devil’s back-bone’ to the tail bone after a Wimberley free throw to tie the score.

Parker Mott would find Griffin open for a mid-range jumper for a score and win with just 4 seconds remaining for the win.
“I did not even think about the pass coming to me,” Griffin recalled. I did not hear anything and my shot looked like it was going to the right and then when it went in it was a, ‘Oh my gosh Moment’.”
Griffin on what type of feeling it meant to make the winning shot, “It feels good and I try not to show it, but inside it is a sensational feeling.”
A game where CL’s battle with the Texans would give you a glimpse that this group of players could be better if playing with a peak performance. Having 22 turnovers compared to 9 for Wimberley would be a sure sign for a loss on most nights.
Having the key players for Canyon Lake that have played this season will help on how well this game might mean for upcoming district contests.

These players have been in every Hawk game this season and having numbers like they had on this night were losses. A team sport has been born and Canyon Lake has captured a chance to continue this run into District 28-4A and beyond.

Coach Chapman commented on what this win means for Canyon Lake, “It is huge and gives us confidence.”
“This win will become a positive and it will push us through district and will be a positive motivation,” Griffin talked bout what this win meant for this team.
A game that Canyon Lake has lost on countless occasions in the past was now a Hawk win and momentum going into this Friday’s away game in Hondo.
