CL Lady Soccer Finished 3rd in Brush Tournament

Girls Hawk Soccer Finishes 3rd in Brush Tournament after win over Beeville, 3-1.

Canyon Lake Girl’s Soccer finished in 3rd place in the Brush County Tournament which was the Hawks first tournament for the 2018 season.

Don Chente says keep going strong Hawks!!

“We had no idea going into the tournament how we would be as a team since our scrimmages were cancelled due to the weather,” Head Coach Amy Thorpe said. “I knew the strength of the players and I felt we had a good shot of finishing in the top group.  Working on team work and working with a new line-up and game strategy is always tricky, although we started sluggish in the first game we were able come together and to finish strong.”

CL was in total control in that first game with Floresville. Canyon Lake enjoyed a 4 goal lead at halftime.

Kalani Thorpe and Kateri Rios both had 2 goals in that first half of play.

“We made a goalie change at halftime to our new freshman keeper and put in several new players.” Coach Thorpe continued.  “The girls slowed down the pace a bit and Floresville got a lucky high shot off, that just skimmed over the fingers of our keeper.  We were still able to score two more goals – one additional one by Thorpe and one by Brandi Schimonsky to keep the win.”

The Hawks had several missed opportunities in their second game which helped seal a loss. Canyon Lake was still in the La Vernia game till the end.

The Bears scored with 7 minutes left in the contest and CL just did not have time to counter that one goal in this battle.

“We had some stellar play in the game by our defense Emily Edge (a senior), Anna Hettinger (a freshman), Ashley Fouse (a senior captain) and Lis Ellery (a senior),” Coach Thorpe recalled. “We will have a rematch against La Vernia at their home in the next few weeks and the girls are looking forward to being healthy and showing what they can really do.”

In that 3rd game, Canyon Lake would not be denied as they were focused on coming away with a 3rd place finish.

The Hawks beat Beeville, 3-1 and had the trio of Rios, Thorpe, and Bennett each with a goal for this victory.

CL’s defense was being displayed in that first half which helped put your Hawks in a good position of carrying out the final game.

Freedom Mail Center says Way to go Hawks!

Kateri Rios and Rachel Bennett scored in that first half in what proved to be enough for a win.

“Going into the second half we were struggling with injuries in key positions and were asking veteran players to play positions that they weren’t used to,” Coach Thorpe said like a Chess Expert. “All of the players stepped up and fought hard to keep the win.”

Thorpe was able to score one more goal in that second half for the final score, 3-1.

The Hawks next game was today against Marble Falls and then they will be on the field on Friday with a game against Burnet. at 2:30pm.

Those two games will tell what and who the Hawks will be playing in the Fredericksburg Tournament.
