CL Weather Storm in Win Over Boerne, 40-35
Canyon Lake beat the Grey(er)hounds after a hard fought overtime win, 40-35 as the Hawks forged back for a tie in the District 28-4A race with Fredericksburg.
This game’s largest lead was a balmy 7 point Hawk advantage at the start of 3rd period when CL’s Caroline Kullberg made a short jumper in the paint after a sweet pass from Alexa Ramos and 22-15 lead. Boerne then had an 8 point run to take the lead, 23-22 with 4:42 still left on the 3rd quarter clock.
The lead changed hands or was tied, 22 times and when Canyon Lake took the lead to start the Overtime on a lay-up by Ramos, the Hawks would not relinquish that advantage for the remainder of this contest.
The Greyhounds got grayer as both sides of the gym were exhausted after this down to the wire battle. Boerne would apply a box and one on Reagan Heun and that had an effect for both teams. Heun finished with 5 points after just 5 shots and no free throws. The ReSporter will have to do some research to find the last time a free throw has not been attempted by Heun this year. Heun took what the Greyhounds would give her and so she reached double digits in rebounding with 14. A big part of what for this contest as those rebounds were off the defensive side of the court that helped this Hawk team in the victory.
“Weather the storm,” Heun said in a howling wind storm. “We fought through it and this was a huge game for our growth and maturity.”
Reducing turnovers also helped in putting a formula together for leaving their gym with another win and stretching the home record to 10-1 with one more contest looming this next Friday against Fredericksburg.
Ramos would be the only Hawk in double digit scoring after a 13 point night. With 4 steals, Ramos now has 301 thefts for her career which has been her calling card for her time at The Lake.
Canyon Lake was lucky to have an overtime, as the ‘free’ throws by Boerne were not a friend in this contest. The Greyhounds made 5 out of 16 tries for the game.
Two of those misses were with 2.9 seconds left in regulation. The Hawks would then commit a turnover on their throw-in that went the full length of the court without being touched. That would give Boerne the ball back under their basket for one last chance for a win. The ball was off and the lucky Hawks would now engage in their 2nd Overtime of the season.
“Because it was my foul that had them on the line had me really….really Praying,” Ramos said reverently. “This was a huge win because it clinches a playoff spot and it helps us keep going for the district title. It has been 4 years of hard work and it has paid off and this win just means a lot now that we (the seniors) can lead this team to the playoffs.”
At the 3:40 mark of that OT, Ramos would get another basket after an assist by Lainee Moses and a, 34-32 advantage. A Hawk foul 25 seconds later would allow Boerne to make one of two free throw shots and a Hawk one point lead, 34-33.
Skylar Hurst had a chance to increase the lead but was short for her two tries leaving the game in limbo and a Hawk one point lead with 2:57 still on the clock.
CL’s defense rose to the occasion and Chelsea Tschoepe stole the ball and fed Moses for a lay-up and a Hawk lead, 36-33. The lead would be reduced back to one after Boerne scored on their next possession leaving, 1:38 left to play.
Ramos scored on a lay-up next and then with Caroline Kullberg sinking two free throws to get the lead to 5 points and making this contest a two score Hawk lead, 40-35. A game where there would be many more Grey hairs as the Greyhounds got Greyer as Canyon Lake now is back on top of the heap and will prepare for Hondo for their 4th game of the year.
Hondo and Boerne are tied for 2nd and will do battle next Friday, just like The Lake will do battle with the Billies for a chance to hold down 1st place in district play. That, of course, is all predicated on each school doing their part on Tuesday.
Canyon Lake will be playing in Hondo which will not be a given while Fredericksburg has a good chance to keep their end of the bargain with a contest against Bandera.
“This will be a big game and it is hard to beat a team 4 times,” Heun closed. “We will have to have energy at Hondo as this will be intense.”
A clear path by taking care of business and following through. Go Hawks!!
