Canyon Lake’s Boys Soccer team is still going strong after an important win over Floresville last Friday at the Hawk Nest, 3-1.

            Go Hawk Boy’s Soccer!

Defense has been the key to this year’s Hawks and in this victory, CL, gave up their first goal that did not involve a penalty kick. Floresville had a well placed shot for that first goal and being perfect for an entire year would have been an impossible expectation anyway.

Canyon Lake did have two goals before that goal and then added another goal in the final period of play for the win.

On how this year has started for Goalie Brayden Damico, “I went to a few camps and with another year of playing varsity and I have just been working at it.”

That is an understatement after giving up 2 goals in the first 8 games of the season.

“I thought it would be a lot worse,” Damico stated after being asked on if he thought CL would have a record like this after the first 8 games. “We are playing as a team and that is a huge chunk of the reason we are where we are.”

Damico saved 2 shots on goal and Floresville was successful that one time….Canyon Lake had 9 shots on goal and scored on 3 of those kicks.

CL’s defense is doing a good job of stopping opposing offenses and the least shots on target then the less a team has a chance of scoring. Simple math!!

Head Coach Ryan Tierney was at a loss on what to expect this year after such a great season and losing some key players to graduation.

“We are taking it as it comes and I did not know what to expect,” Coach Tierney started. “We still have a huge part of the guys still left here and they played a huge roll by being a part of that team, so, I am not surprised on how this year has turned out so far.”

Coach Tierney was commenting on how last year’s team had an opportunity to play so many meaningful games during their playoff run and how that would turn out helping the younger players as they would go into this year’s season.

On this night, Matthew Bell, Josh Sczech and Trenton Lorett all would score just enough for their 7th win of the year.

Mima's says good game Freshman Hawks!!

Go Hawks & Beat Liberty Hill!!

To put this bluntly, with this win, Canyon Lake is just one win away of matching the Hawks 2 years ago and that would make this year the second best ever. Last year’s total of 16 victories was 8 more than the previous season and a lofty goal for this time around.

Coach Tierney says that Lorett is this year’s striker and that is what Grayson Rohrbacher and Mike Thorpe were in those two previous seasons.

“He had to talk me into that,” Coach Tierney recalls after talking with Lorett before and during the season. “I was going to put him at the mid-fielder and then the back line, but he is a sweet talker and he has a burst of speed.”

This has been a nice surprise for the Hawks as Coach Tierney will tell you, “A striker are hard to find!”

Now Canyon Lake will have one of their toughest battles this Tuesday as Liberty Hill will pay a visit to the Hawk Nest and more will be known about this year’s group as they continue to work on their game as the Hawk District is always tough.

Go Hawks!!
