First-Second-& Third time is a Charm in Lady Hawks Win over Hondo, 43-31
Lady Hawks took care of business after disposing the Hondo Owls for the 3rd time this year, 43-31.
“This was a big win for us,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “They (Hondo) make it hard and that will affect our shooting percentage….but we will have to get better at rebounding and reducing our turnovers.”
Canyon Lake has had a different player in each win over Hondo this season and on this night Caroline Kullberg came to the rescue after pouring in 14 points with 6 blocks and 8 rebounds on this night.

With those 6 blocks, Kullberg has achieved the most for a season of play with 49 which passed Amber Ramsey’s total of 48 blocks back during the 2013 season.

“We worked together and were not selfish with the ball,” Kullberg said in response to winning the game. “We know what they (Hondo) are going to do after playing them two times this year.”
Kullberg was reacting to playing the Owls for the 3rd time and knowing a 4th time is the end of this month.
On how Kullberg has a knack for getting blocks, “I cage over them so they will have to shoot into my arms…and I need to be prepared and get my timing right.”
Canyon Lake had a sloppy night in handling the basketball as the Hawks committed 26 turnovers and many of those miscues were unforced.
This Hawk team could be a force if they can put all the game facets together, as this win was after a sub .500 free throw performance and a 31% shooting percentage from the floor.
The good news was a win, but those mistakes can turn on a team, too.
Kullberg’s inside play would be the difference as her 8 rebounds had 7 coming from the offensive side which helped with those 2nd chance points which would be needed for this eventual victory.
Both teams did not come out of the chute shooting well after a, 6-6 tie in that first period.
CL’s defense took care of the Owls after limiting Hondo to 21 points going into the final stanza.
Canyon Lake outscored Hondo by 6 points coming out of their halftime discussion, giving the Hawks a 9 point lead entering their final quarter.
The win was needed as Canyon Lake was able to get a district win which had eluded them for over a year.
Getting a win next Tuesday in Fredericksburg will take a better effort as this being a road game and will have all those trappings that will need to be avoided.
A good season with a record of 23-6 but more wins will be needed as the District 28-4A season gets into hyper drive.
Canyon Lake’s next home game will be next Friday when Bandera comes calling to the Hawk Nest.
Go Hawks!!
