Lady Hawks Win Big over Billies, 47-38
Canyon Lake takes Fredericksburg and a tie for first place in their District 28-4A race after a 9 point win, on a Thursday night, over the Billies, 47-38.
“That was our best execution all year,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “We had good open looks and in that 2nd period we executed what we are suppose to do and got those good looks.”
It was a good looking night, as the Hondo Owls beat front runner Boerne and with the Hawk win a traffic jam has now formed with a 3 team tie for the ultimate district crown on the line.
That first quarter was not a good sign, however, as CL was looking at a 4 point deficit after the that period and was in search of some mojo to stage a chance for a win.
The Hawks came back with a, 19-8 second quarter which erased their 4 point deficit, giving Canyon Lake a 7 point lead to start their second half of play.
There was some good signs as CL took care of the ball and by reducing their turnovers, this game would put them in a position for a big win. If Canyon Lake had lost this battle then they would have been in a position of finishing in the bottom half of their district race with one more contest to finish the round robin of games.
“When we can get our turnovers below 20, then we will win most of those games,” Coach Burleson stated like a mathematician.
CL, by eliminating those miscues would increase their possessions for opportunities for scoring.
The Seniors would not be denied as Reagan Heun finished with 20 points and Alexa Ramos scored 7 points with 6 assists from her guard play.
Char Hutson continues to have a knack of making her 3 pointers that will give opponents an extra weapon they have to defense. Hutson’s percentage from beyond the arc is no different from her shooting those 2 pointers as this season enters into the last lap of a marathon season.
There was some good support by those Sophomores too. Chelsea Tschoepe finished with 10 points and Caroline Kullberg continues her Block Party accumulating 5 in this Billie’s game.
Defense wins games and Fredericksburg entered this game with a 51 point average and CL held them 13 points under that mark. That has been the Hawks calling card this whole season and when they can keep that part of their game in tact, then having a low turnover rate coupled with a decent night shooting will result in a 9 point win. That can aways be a good result.
Canyon Lake wrestled the lead from the Billies in that 2nd quarter and would sustain that advantage until the final horn. Fredericksburg did stage a comeback coming within 3 points going into that final period. CL would have a repeat of their 2nd quarter to finish this evening with that 9 point victory and first place tie.
“With 3 and a half minutes to go the game was still tight but we were able to make good decisions and our girls hit open shots and we knocked our free throws down,” Coach Burleson closed.
Result would be an important win that now has Canyon Lake in the heat of a battle for first.
Now sporting a 24-6 record, the Hawks, can write their own destiny. By winning out they can claim an outright District 28-4A Championship and a top seed entering into the playoff season.

Canyon Lake will host Bandera on Friday while Fredericksburg and Boerne battle it out to have an outright lead or be tied with the Hawks with a win over Bandera this Friday.
Another good omen is having Boerne and Fredericksburg coming to the Hawk Nest for those second round of contests and by protecting the Hawks Nest, this might just play a roll in finishing with their desired result.
